Cold Start

Post by westside » Wed Dec 19, 2012 2:50 pm

one thing I have noticed in the cold weather is that when i start my car it idles pretty rough and then sometimes stalls when i go to move it..has anyone else had this?. Its ok after about 15 seconds but sometimes the glow plug sign pops up afterwards.  I havent owned a D before but surly that cant be right....  Do I just have to start it in cold weather and leave it running without applying any throttle? as If i do this it stalls again...

Anyway I have it booked in for the security update (not sure how long that takes) and I have asked them to look at that and also why the passanger comfort access doesnt work (all the other doors do) thought i best get this done before the door card comes off for fitting the ice otherwise there just blame the speakers lol!  See what I canget out of them for warrenty work, I use sunnigdale synter as they have always served me well with the x5 and are mod friendly :-)

Hi not if BMW new diesels the same, but with wife's diesel Astra you turn key to where key all lights including the diesel Glowplug light on dash.

Then you wait 5 to 10 seconds for the light to go out then you can start car and it's fine.

Mine is good as gold.  Key in, press button to get all the Xmas lights on, wait till only engine and parking brake are left on, depress brake and press the Start button momentarily again and the glow plug symbol appears (if needed) then the engine starts and all under computer control.  Steady idle immediately and has never stalled.

Yours defo doesn't sound right.  Could be any number of things, but needs a bit of looking at.  As these things have DPFs they are not supposed to be left idling.

Sorry but nope.  Both my X6 and the wife's X5 may briefly - like for < 5 seconds - rev up to 1500rpm on a very cold start, but nothing like 15 seconds.  Hopefully just a choke issue which they can flash via the ECU when updating the rest of the stuff (ie. for free!!)

ps.  I am amazed at how well I am spelling considering how much fizz I am currently consuming - hic!

I thought that the glow plug heating happened when you unlocked the car and the glow plug light only came on when it was really cold and needed a little longer to do the heating up?

Not on mine it doesn't.  I've only ever seen the Glowplugs come on when the 'Start Engine' mode is operated.  You could use a lot of taters power if the plugs operated when the locks operate as you may not being going to drive anywhere but might just be getting something from the car.

That being said, stranger things do happen......

Reading my copy of the BMW Training notes for injuneers, it sayeth....(and yes I know I'm a nerd... :P )

The heating system assumes various operating modes that are explained in the following:
Start Heating
Preheating

Start heating is activated during every engine start procedure when the coolant temperature is below 75°C. Start heating begins after the engine speed threshold of 42 rpm has been exceeded.

Preheating is activated after terminal 15 has been switched on. The heater system indicator in the instrument cluster is activated at a coolant temperature of ≤ 10°C.

ahh that maybe its me...i dotn wait for any lights to go out i just wack the key in and hit start.maybe i should stick the key in wait till the parking light goes out then start it.  The exhaust is being today so I bet there blame that lol!

its due a software update so i'll get that done and see if its sorts it...however sounds a bit more like user error and I should wait for the light to go out before getting excited lol

Never knew about that sequence with the start button as on the e53, I would just hold te key in the glow position for a bit first when really cold.

Thanks nerd, sorry, Richard :)

Congratulations Richard you are our top nerd  :bravo: :pokey:

I have to admit that I assumed the car wouldn't start until the glow plugs were up to temp.
