snow chanis for 255 55 R19
Hi Guys, can anyone recommend snow chains for 255 55 R19 ?
Never used them so not sure if any would (Polar for example) do or I need to look for specific brands and quality matters?
Also do I need 2 or 4?

Are you talking as a worst case scenario in the UK or while on holiday in say France? I would be looking at those that are easy to fit first. As a rule they go on the driven wheels, but do you really need four? I would be happy with two on the rear wheels. That said, I would be more inclined to use winter tyres before considering snow tyres.

Thanks Don,
This is only for driving in Alps. Was under impression that's a requirement to put chains for driving up the mountain. Chains would go on winter tyres, I doubt any can fit my summer 315-35-R20 ::)

If memory hasn't failed me, I seem to remember that four wheel drive and cars fitted with winter tyres are not required to put snow chains on. You have both four wheel drive and winters. This was in France but can ask the old man who will be in the alps this weekend in his disco.

Re: snow chanis for 255 55 R19
The handbook suggests that chains/socks are only required on the rear wheels.
Have you considered socks? I have a set of unused socks, for 19" wheels. that I will be selling as I no longer drive in the Alps during winter.

Re: snow chanis for 255 55 R19
Spoke to the old man who lives in France and spends a few weeks each winter in the alps. No requirement for chains with 4x4 and winters, however no harm in having them with you incase you come across very heavy snowfall. He has a story about a RR Sport stuck in the snow but obviously no idea what their tyre set up was. I would suggest waiting until you get to France before purchasing the chains as they will be better priced and have more availability.
Although I've never used snow socks, I wonder how they would perform in a situation that was too much for a winter shod 4x4.
Where are you going. I tend to ski in Tignes.

Drove down to Tignes in the E53 soon after getting it.....in the end didnt need winter tyres or snow chains as the roads were really clear. Did have chains with me though but then again the wheels were smaller then.

Going to Meribel in 3 Valleys end of Feb. According to some forums. chains are not required for 4x4 with snow/winter tyres. If the weather is bad police will be checking cars and turn you around if you don't have winter tyres/socks/chains.
Personally would prefer chains to socks as believe they will provide better traction on packed snow. However X5 should be ok without.
I'll follow below advice and will buy chains locally if weather is really bad.

For Meribel id be tempted to take chains even though the lodge mini bus just had snow tyres but it is a smaller resort than tignes and when it did snow it took them a while to clear the roads

I agree with Squeaky on the sanef toll badge - can save a lot of time at busy tolls as you get close to the Albertville area. Alos veryt convenient if travelling overnight and passengers are asleep.
