Driver Door -Help!!

Post by bigsanj » Thu Dec 06, 2012 9:06 am

Hi all

The wife has just rang me to tell me she can't close the drivers door.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It's probably frozen, happened to mine many a time. I think it will just take time to thaw out unfortunately. I know this won't help your wife at the moment though :(  She could try getting the inside of the car as warm as possible with the doors closed - or as closed as she can get it. I think it is the mechanism inside the door itself behind the handle that freezes, so pouring hot warer on the lock probably won't do any good.

Well I got to her and she managed to close the door but then wouldn't open.

Got it working now. Was worried she had broken something!

Good news :) If the door won't open from the outside don't try and force it as it will break the mechanism inside - well documented problem. If my drivers door would not open easily, I would find one that did, usually one of the back doors and open that and climb through into the front and open the door from the inside :)

Freaked me out 2 Christmas's ago when it happened to me. Ended up dropping the window and holding the door closed and putting the lock pin down to hold it in place.

Is this an issue that only effects E53s or are the E70/71s effected as well?

I sprayed WD40 in the lock and around about it after this happened to me a couple of weeks ago - been ok since. I half expected it again this morning with a frost white car at -4c but all ok.

This happened to me over the two winters I owned mine! I used to have to open the rear doors & climb over & then when I opened the drivers door it wouldn't then shut so I had to drive to work holding the door shut going around corners it just adds to the fun!  :)

The problem I had though was when i got to work the door wouldn't shut properly so I couldn't lock & alarm it so I had to spend ages breathing on the door handle to try to thaw it! Fun & games  :)

Not had this problem yet, but I keep mine in the garage and use my GSM heater to pre-warm the car anyway :p

That's the answer keep the X garaged & you won't get the problem  :) at the time I only had 1 garage & the TVR had that,so my poor X had to stay on the drive, we both miss the X5 loads but not the fuel bills!  ;)
