E70 3.0D SE Economy issue
Re: E70 3.0D SE Economy issue
I zeroed the trip yesterday and took my business partner for a 20 mile trip yesterday, drove 6 of those miles at 40mph on back roads and 14 miles on dual carriageway at 73mph exactly, when we parked back at work I had averaged 18.3mpg.
This morning I zeroed and drove 10 miles to work, 30mph on 3 miles back roads and 50mph exactly on 7 miles of dual carriageway, when I parked at work I had achieved 20.6mpg
I used to get 20% better economy from my 3 litre PETROL E53 a few years back.
The dealer 1st said they wanted to try and repair but I only had to decline firmly (stating my fear that if the car has been running rich for some time I am more likely to have a DPF replacement which is not covered by the AUC warranty) and the sales guy I have dealt with on my last 2 purchases was very understanding, I have a '59 730D in Sapphire Black with Oyster/Dakota interior arriving early next week, a bit more money of course but the dealer have been great from start to finish.
Thanks all.

Definitely sounds like a problem with that car to only get that MPG on the runs you describe. Good to hear that the Dealer was on your side though. I wonder if they knew it had an 'issue'. The 7er is a nice car though so let's hope it proves a little easier on your fuel budget.....

I will do, I am a BMW man through and through, have had just about every model, the 2007 730D I traded in last week was fantastic, probably should have kept it but it had 103k on the clock and I fancied a change, pretty sure the new 7 will be great.

My 740 was one of my favourite cars as well.

Hi,
Just read through this thread and have to say I'm shocked at the poor figures. My last e53 would avg. 26mpg and that was me with a heavyish right foot and living in a hilly area. I'm looking at a 4.0d X6, so hope the figures are not going to be any worse than mid twenties!
Your new 7 looks nice, looking forward to a full array of pics.

Welcome potshot. Interesting figures. According to the site the X6 4.0d returns 28.8. Now I've only had the car for less than three weeks but put 1500 on the clock and the combined mpg......a scary 28.8. That said, I live in a hilly area and short runs to school, shops etc. kill the economy. Most trips are to and from work, 22 miles each way on A roads, so able to bring back the average with careful (tortuously resisting the urge to push the fun pedal) driving. ::)

No doubt this is part of the reason that the EU and US are trying to come up with a new way of doing the measurements. Be about 2014/15 before anything appears, assuming they can ever agree though. We know the MPG in the official data actually means 'Most Pleasant Guess'..... >:(

Hi I have a x5 e70 2008 low emmisions ,cheap tax £220 a year with me or my wife driving it it will only average 18mpg - 21mpg but most of the time it's 19mpg ,I Owend a e53 and that was the same so I think that is the norm unless u are a Sunday driver and with power like that u may as well use it or buy a smaller car .
