Valuing my 4.4 Sport

Post by shocks » Sat Oct 02, 2010 11:13 pm

Not disimlar to Jas328sport, I'm getting the X5 ready for sale, need some help looking at the values for this. Spec / History is :

52 plate
4.4i Sport on 19" rims
Black
Grey Leather
Xenons
Sunroof
Sun Protection glass
Parking Sensors (front and rear)
Running Boards
Heated seats
Elec / folding dimming mirrors
No Comms - just standard Biz radio setup
54'300 miles, Full Service history (just had inspection 2 done), Taxed for 11 months and MOT same

Was thinking, from looking at autotrader and the likes of putting it for 9500, thoughts ?

Just getting ready for the new 4.0d Msport E70 :-) and may end up keeping the 4.4 as well as have a 5 series that mrs uses and could offload that instead :driving:

No expert Shocks but for a 52plate 4.4, 9500 might be a little optimistic, but if thats what they advertised in Autotrader for should be a good indication. Most people really want the comms as to fit a decent aftermarket satnav will be well over a grand. Have seen some 'facelifts' - including diesels getting closer and closer to the 10k mark.
I know e-bay not the place to research but have seen 4.4s there for 7k. Condition/mileage of course may be iffy.
All cars though - as we know only worth what someone is willing to pay.
Low mileage - i would sell the 5 series and keep the X!!!

Maybe AW8 should invert the buyers guide to a sellers guide..... :D

Hmm................

Though somewhat tongue in cheek the last post actually made me consider creating a seperate sellers guide.

In abscence of such a guide yet being in existence, the stronger sale money for owners selling is likely to be secured by those who would fare well on a passing a buyers inspection based around points covered in my buyers guide albeit the cost prep a car to faultless showroom condition might make this unrealistic to some.

Sad as it is your average joe buying used is motivated by money - this unfortunately means any car offered for sale should ideally be competitively priced in relation to others advertised of simlar spec/age/mileage............of course if not much in the numbers then a better advert may give the edge.

No real science to valuations & most serious on achieving a sale in a decent timescale will do research on P.H. A.T. & ebay classifieds & compete accordingly.

Difficult to price the above car. Positives are black & low miles but the lack of comms is an issue, (V8's absent of comms are quiet rare). With comms I think it could make 10k or more but £9k may be nearer the money- maybe less. Average miles with comms would make say 9.5k - deduct for comms to say 8k add say 20% for the miles and that takes you to around your 9.5k. If priced at £9.5k or even a smidgen over most will try to bag it for £9k so why not start give yourself edge of an £8999 asking price if nothing else due to the sheer amount of cars sub 9k.

I must stress I havent price researched non comms 4.4i cars. All the buyers and pricing guides can be thrown in the bin to some extent as the bottom line is you may need to compete with cheaper priced examples & sadly there are one ot two out there with questionable maintenance & condition that others will chase - just to be able to decalre having an X5 on the drive, (or increasingly the kerbside).

I know for a fact that at least one leading uk independent workshop has been snowed under with folk bringing recently purchased X5's where owners have soon found inherited items needing attention thus drawing attention to the mileage & Insp 2 may help in advertising.......I am sure the OP knows this as these relavant positive factors have been mentioned when seeking the valuation

Good Luck

Shocks, IMO I don't think your pricing is far off the mark. With the mileage as it is and full history indicated will stand out above others. However I note that it looks like it is staying in the family from your other post. Comms is not an issue at this age and price point for private sales, a decent Tom Tom can be picked up for no money these days and is much better than the MKIII unit that would have been in your 'X' when built new.

Out of interest did you get a p/x price from the dealer against the new 40d or did you take a discount?

Chompers,

Normally I would agree re the comms isentiments on older cars. I know that many in trade would argue comms not such a big factor on older cars but I still reckon many used buyers expect to find it on a V8 X5. IMO a car absent of it needs another edge to hold out for the money...(in this case colour Insp2 & mileage).

I may of course be wrong - I have a high regard for your experience & comments & particularly re buying & selling.

Hmm...........Having looked at the large number of X5's & their prices on PH classifieds it's fair to say supply may exceed demand at the moment. Even diesels dipping.

Whilst low mileage examples not in abundance I reckon an asking price starting with a 9 could be a little optimistic..........as much as I would like to be able to talk up the residuals, (remember I drive one too).

Good Luck

Hear what your saying AW8 and agree that there is a good selection of e53's available at the moment. While petrol heads like us know all about PH, I think in the main Autotrader is more widely used when private buyers are looking for cars. There are not many V8's with less than 60k on them for sale at the moment and those that are seem to be around £9k. Still think Shock's 'X' has a possibility to achieve £9k ish with its history.

Guys - really appreciate the feedback here, i'm going to go for somewhere in the high 8's mark for this. Before it goes up it's off for professional detailing to add an edge to the sale.

Yep - in hind sight getting a non-comms version wasn't best (it does have a tom-tom integrated-ish). Someone is going to get a steal of a v8 here - well loved - never abused. Will be posting it here with pics and PH, see how that goes then go to autotrader with it.

Chomper on the p/x -v- discount found I could only get a poor deal on p/x and better yield if I went discount route and cash for the 4.0d, acheived 9.8% discount on list + other concessions. Picking up end of month as car arrives at dealer on 15th though will be in US then :-(

Many thanks

No problem with feedback, thats what we are all here for  and also not surprised re: the route you took to purchase the new e70. Its a sad fact that dealers just are not interested in p/x's any more unless they can retail there way out of them. Also most now have an auction only policy  which takes the trade out of the equation and the possibility for some effort to be put into the deal :headbang:

I really don't think its a big issue not having Nav on your car, the only useful part of the comms pack on your age of e53 as the analog tv will soon be no more and must people want BT instead of a hard wired phone. Not sure if you purchased this 'X' new or second hand. If the latter, asume you purchase at the correct price at the time so all relative.

Good luck with the sale of the V8. The more I'm reading about values and slowing sales rates the more glad I am that I came out of my V8 back in May!!!

Defo didn't mean anything by my post fella, in a bad place just now due to family illness and less than on form.

Your buying guide is without doubt the definitive as far as the X is concerned and I for one would refer to it despite my experience (albeit bad).

I'll be back 8-)

Mate........II can relate to family illness & being off form but rest assured I totally took coments as a light hearted but valid suggestion :D
