Picked up the 116d yesterday, It drives very well indeed, plenty of power for him, I had read reviews that it was underpowered. Most complained about the rear passenger space being really cramped ( buy a bigger car then ! ) We had to call at the Post Office to tax it on the way back 30 quid for a year!!!!!
Its got the stop start fuel saving thingy, that was a bit annoying, so keep the car in gear or the foot on the clutch and it doesnt stop.
The only thing I would change would be ditching the run flats as they ruin the ride, not as bad as on my 5 series but crashy on rough tarmac.
My lad is pleased as punch with it though, then again I would be at his age.

Sounds Good.  Our Mini has the same stop/start function, but you can override it so it doesn't operate all the time.

I thought stop start can be disbaled each journey at push of a button. Stateside dealers will make the default stop/strart "OFF".  Look here .  If really unable to get used to it then  maybe speak to dealer or an indy to see it they can do this for you.....jason should be able to advise. Unless son is minted I suspect the fuel saving of this feature would be a positive thing.

Rather than try and disable the Start Stop function, why not imbrace the feature.  Had it on the 520d and putting the car in neutral with foot off the clutch doesn't take long to become second nature.  All stops of more than four seconds will result in a fuel saving.

Thanks for the replies, he quite likes the novelty of the stop/start function. I found it a bit un nearving,I suppose I would get used of it after a while and it will not activate if it is cold,or the battery is low, so as you say its got to be a moneysaver, and because of that you get cheap car tax. Ive just renewed mine on the X5, 270.00 quid ! 116d for me next then. ( maybe not )

I agree that the feature can be a little unnerving in the beginning, it can also take a little time to get used to the engine firing up when not expected, say on an extra long stop.  I found it helped at the lights as well, as I would wait for the lights to change before going into gear.  This would take away the need to race everyone off the lights.  >:D. Could be an advantage with the lad.  ::)

Hi Guys
My step son has just boughthis first BMW 1 series 116 D car, he loves it. he is a very sensible young lad and has asked me to advise him on a warranty that will cover him against major componant failure.
I have only had one warranty to date, and never needed to have a claim.
Please can anyone please recommend a suitable affordable warranty to cover the usual high expense failure items that can occur. Ther car is a 116D 59 plate 5 door hatchback with 690000 K miles.

Congrats to the lad on breaking him BMW cherry.  I'm sure he will really love the car and experience of BMW ownership.  Sorry, but no experience with warranty companies, but if it was me I would search for reviews to get a feel for how the companies behave when claims come in.
