Random speaker issue

Post by Nxnumber1 » Tue Nov 20, 2012 1:56 pm

Hi guys!

I have had my X 2 months now and absolutely love it!

However, I noticed that I have an issue with the mid bass speakers in both doors on drivers side of vehicle. I have the 10 speaker setup, but the weird thing is both the tweeters in the same door work fine!

I took the door panels off to check connections, however everything seemed ok.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

the amp (bm54) is the usual suspect for dead speaker issues, but if your tweeters are working i don't think its an issue with the amp.

you might have to check the speakers themselves to see if they're busted - give a sound output from a different source to the battery terminals or even a low voltage current to the speaker terminals should give a crackling noise from the speaker if the speaker is working.

Could be either just the actual speakers or the amp tbh. The upgraded system amp actually powers each speaker individually.

Many thanks for the reply guys, I'll have to delve a little further. I was hoping it wasn't the amp though as I imagine they are big bucks. Is there a different amp for the 10 speaker system?

I saw an ad on eBay for a company that recondition the business unit as they believe that could cause speaker outages? £175...

Random speaker issue

I have contacted a chap called Baris (XkaliBar) who is famous on M3 forums for repairing Bm54 amps.

He does a 24 hour turnaround repair for £100 or can do an upgrade for more power plus add things like aux/iPod input and even a BT module for A2DP audio streaming.

By all accounts he is the man and gets amazing feedback for his diagnostic work

I am sending my unit to him once my car comes back from the body shop at the weekend and will let you know

There is a thread somewhere on how to remove the unit-quite easy-it's under the spare wheel

Thanks very much for that, much appreciated.

I think that I'll be sending mine off sometime soon for that price!

good find

tbh, this service is commonly available on ebay, incl the wattage upgrade, although i hadn't heard of the firmware upgrade.. i had mine done over an year back, from an ebay shop

but its always better to know somebody humble, honest and reliable. i'd def. go to him if i have an issue again. thanks for the find.

re Nxnumber1's issue though, so its a 10 speaker system? i guess that's not what i have, what i have is the standard system (although now upgraded by myself  :)) )

i only hope the 10 speaker system is also powered by a BM54?

Good question.

Would it still be a bm54 amp? I don't have DSP but I believe BMW did a 10 speaker 'hi-fi' upgrade. If it isn't a bm54, would it still be able to be fixed?

Yes - 10 speaker system also powered by BM54 which then feeds to the HK amp.

Out of BM54, into HK, out of HK into speakers.
