Loss of sound after a minute
Loss of sound after a minute
Hi Guys and Gals,
Been lurking for a while and have taken lots of infomation from some very knowledable people on here, so thought I best say hello (but with problems)
My 4.8is has the DSP option and when I start the car the radio comes on as normal but after a minute I lose the sound, Also lost is the voice directions from the satnav, All other voice commands work via the lovely lady who tells me she doesnt understand and the bluetooth works ok, callers can hear me and vice versa.
If I turn the radio off immediatly after the loss of sound and turn it back on, hey presto, music for another minute, and then gone.
The cd player works ok but acts the same as the radio and satnav.
Sat nav works fine.
Its a 2005 model
Any help would be most appreciated
Dave

Welcome.
I removed your duplicate post in the E70 section
Can't help you with the problem though (possibly ribbon ?). Hopefully another member can help though.

Re: Loss of sound after a minute
Hmmm, interesting one for sure.
It sounds a bit like when the amps clip and basically shut down hence why when you turn off and back on it resets and then goes again. I believe the voice control and Bluetooth use the internal amp on headunit where as everything else use the amps in the boot.

Re: Loss of sound after a minute
I think your right Raj,
A little bit of an update,
When the audio goes I still have an audio output from the BM54, I have checked this by connecting up a remote speaker directly to the output wires the feed the DSP amp,
I was informed that it could be a fault with the cd pchanger or satnav drive, so disconnected both these and it still acts the same,
The remote feed wire from the BM54 which turns the DSP amp on stays live all the time. As does the main live for the DSP amp, Earths are ok.
Here is the interestijg part, Once audio has gone I still have the option to select the DSP settings from the head unit, If I go into the settings and change one of these the sounds comes back at the volume level it was on, However, I am not able to adjust the volume. I can swap from radio to cd changer and TV and the audio is cintinuos until I turn the radio off,
Turn it back on and I get audio for 1 mintue, I can adjust the volume in this time and change from CD to TV and get audio for that minute.
My thoughts so far are that the headunit is telling the DSP amp to cut shut down via the Ibus, by moving a setting in DSP it confuses it and it comes back to live but with no ability to adjust volume,
My next step is to get navcoder and a lead and investigate if there are any messages being sent to the DSP amp to tell it to shut down. (now ordered and awaiting delivery)

Re: Loss of sound after a minute
Update
I bought a comms lead and downloaded Navcoder,
Scanned the DSP amplifier to grab the infomation and comes back with the wrong chassis number, says the vehicle is an E39 and no satnav.
Thats my answer I think, The previous owner may of changed the dsp amp and not had is codded to the X5.
Anyone know someone in North London that can code these? some have said its dealer only?

Hi
I have just looked on my BMW Scanner 1,4,0. software and it has a section labeled up DSP, so should be able to read, and recode the DSP.
Has anyone got a scanner near you that could check yours or their X5 ( if they have DSP that is )
I'm sorry I havnt got DSP on mine or I would run a scan and see what could be recoded.

Re: Loss of sound after a minute
From infomation on the interweb, it indicates that the early Phillips units on pre 99 cars do not hold vehicle infomation,
The kears unit does, and so talks through the Ibus and if it doesnt mach the rest of the car it shuts down,
I'm in talks with a few BMW dealer techs and am waiting for some more infomation,
Its certainly been a good learning curve so far!

Re: Loss of sound after a minute
Ok, an update,
BMW told me these amps are plug and play, there wasnt one indy that seemed to know, I was 100% convinced it was a coding issue as the DSP amp was reading the wrong chassis number,
I purchased some diagnostics software, NOw, I'm not a novice at this kind of stuff and have been working with diagnostics for over 10 years, a fully qualified auto electrician and now a manager for a well known breakdown comany.
A couple of hours sat in the car the other night with my laptop and hey presto! a fully working radio, The DSP amp did infact need coding to the car, someone in the past had replaced it for whatever reason and not realised it needed coding, Also I had an issue with the fuel gauge incorrectly reading, This was also sorted with an intrument cluster reset. (possibally an incorrect jump start procedure that being the cause)
I'm one happy bunny!
The car is now 100% error free in all respects, I suspect that the previous owner may of traded this car in for these reasons,, What a fool! LOL

Would you be willing to post up what diagnostics software/hardware you sourced and when you 'coded' the amp, what exactly did that involve? Just curious....
Well done btw!
