I haven't had one fitted yet but looking at options at present. I haven't found anyone local that has fitted to an X6 but have found a local guy who has fitted to plenty of other BMWs and comes across as knowing his stuff. Quoted around £400 for the job.

I've been quoted £350 for a 2012 X5 detachable in Essex. Same guys did my E60 a few years ago - brilliant job and completely unnoticeable when not attached. For some reason I can't quite hit "go" on the X but I am sure I will.
Current: 2012 X5 MSport 3.0d - carbon black, 3rd row, panoramic, media, TV, top-view camera, power boot.
Former: 2006 520d SE (E60) - auto, black leather

Sorry I got mine as an optional extra on a new build X6 M50d. But it's great for the bikes

That sounds good value to me. Surely the parts only can't be far of that price on their own. What make bar do they fit?

double-checked the email - £330 not £350. Doesn't say the type in the quote - but they put a Witter on my E60.
Anyone got strong views on 7 or 13 pins? I'm working on the basis that it probably makes sense to go for 13pins - I don't tow a caravan, but who knows one day?

13 pin. All new vans come with 13 pin plugs now and they are better than 7 pin:-
Watertight fitting
Twist-lock coupling system removing the need to use force.
Single socket mounting - good for detachable towbar systems
Single plug on the caravan/trailer

+1 so much easier and secure than the seven plug, plus someone buying your car in the future will expect a 13 pin if they have a caravan.

They are far more reliable and less prone to dicky connections...
Only issue is if you need to tow someone elses trainler with 7 pin then you need the adaptor..
Conversely when your X is off the road (or stood on teh side of oone waiting for a lorry!!) and you borrow another vehicle which has 7pin sockets you need another adaptor... Guess how i found that one out!!!

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)
