intermittant power drain

Post by fatladandy » Sun Oct 28, 2012 1:56 pm

I am getting an intermittant power drain on my 2002 4.4i sport x5. The aa checked to 2 weeka ago and at the time there was no drain on it. Since then i have had the fan blowing when the car is off so have replaced the final stage resistor.. Again today the car has struggled to start. The car has aftermarket hid lights which i plan on removing and replacing with standard bulbs.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what could be causing the problems?
Cheers

Andy.

Did you check to see if the car shut down after 15 minutes or so?

You should see the transmission light go off at that stage. If it remains on, something is drawing a current.

And has the battery been tested together with the alternator?

That sounds like the right data both for 'quiet' current draw, and Alternator output.  Has the battery been fully recharged using a slow charge (12 hours or so) rather than a 'battery boiler'?

If you have the built in phone, that can occasionally cause issues.  Do you use, or have anything plugged into the 12V sockets?  Any modifications?

Chasing down intermittent drains is a PITA.  Other than having the car attached to diagnostics, it's often a case of pulling fuses one by one until you find the right one.

The car does have a built in phone but is switcyed off as it doesnt have a sim card in it. The battery was recharged overnight usong a slow charger.
The only mod to the car is aftermarket hids. I am going to remove them and replace with normal bulbs as i have heard that they occasionally cause a problem.

Never heard of hids causing a drain? Perhaps just try disconnecting them and see if the drain goes before completely removing them.
