E70 3.0D SE Economy issue
Hi all, I traded my 2007 730D for a 2007 E70 X5 3.0d SE this week (May 2007 build so £460 road tax, gutted).
In my 7 series which I owned for 2 years (only changed as it had covered 103k miles) I averaged 28mpg as I do a lot of country road driving and don't hang around, on a motorway I would get between 33 and 35mpg and at worst in town 25mpg.
I have only had the X5 for a few days but cannot get anything like the economy I was expecting, 75mph with cruise on motorway gives 26mpg, in town I am seeing 18mpg and my current average is 21.9mpg.
The car has done 52k miles and was owned by a middle aged couple from new.
I have checked in the hidden menu and whatever I do the coolant temperature is 86-88 degrees, I think this may be too low?
Other than that what would you suggest, I will call the salesman at the dealer tomorrow (he is off today) as this is an AUC car with 12 months BMW warranty.
Any advice appreciated.

That sounds about right..
Dont forget the X5 is (almost) the same engine as the 730D but prob twice the wieght.
Cruise control is not necessarily the most economical user either though.

Hi, my 730D was 1875kg and the X5 is 2075kg
Figures quoted on parkers and by BMW indicate very similar economy.
Also, I owned an E53 3.0i Sport petrol X5 a few years ago that gave BETTER economy than this diesel, I am convinced something is wrong.

E70 3.0D SE Economy issue
Try cruising 68 mph. I bet you'll gain several mpg from that. It makes a huge different on our VW touran between 75 & 68. One gives me 650 miles to the tank the other gives me 800+.

The X5 is obviously less aerodynamic than the 7 series, has greater frontal area and also has 4WD so I would expect materially worse mpg, but your figures do seem low. FYI I get high 20s in my 40d (mixed driving) according to the trip computer. Actual is no doubt a tad lower.

Mines a 2010 35d so not a direct comparison but pretty close. At the speeds you mention on cruise I reckon I get 33mpg , maybe a little more.

I just spoke to my brother who has a '54 E53 3.0D SE , he consistently averages 31mpg (checked on computer while I was on the phone) , I would say we have similar driving styles, we live in the same village in Norfolk and have similar routes to work (he has 7 miles further than me on dual carriageway, my journey is 10 miles)

My 2008 twin turbo is doing 22MPG locally. Hit 28MPG - 30MPG on trip back from Hertfordshire. Not sure you are that far off expected MPG to be honest.

Not happy at all, after I posted this I searched the internet and found many people with the same complaint with the E70 diesel, quoted economy is virtually identical to the quoted economy of the 730D but real world it seems 30%+ worse.
I will contact the dealer tomorrow and discuss my options, my HP agreement states:
Right of Withdrawal
You have the right to withdraw from this credit agreement under Section 66A
of the Consumer Credit Act 197 4 by giving us written or oral notice of
withdrawal before the end of the period of 14 calendar days beginning with
the day after the relevant day. If you sign this agreement at the dealership
which supplies the vehicle, the relevant day is the day on which you receive
a copy of the executed agreement from the dealership. In any other case, the
relevant day is the day on which you receive written notice from us that the
executed agreement is in identical terms to the copy of the unexecuted
agreement which has been given to you:
(a) You must give us your notice of withdrawal by post or delivery to us at
BMW Financial Services, Customer Accounts Department, Europa
House, Bartley Way, Hook, Hampshire RG27 9UF, or by email to us at
customer.accounts@bmwfin.com, or by fax to us to on 01256 749200 or
by phone to us on 0870 5050 198. You do not need to give us any
reason;
(b) If you withdraw from this agreement after the credit has been provided,
we will keep any advance payment you have paid and you must pay

BMW may have a get out of jail card in that the DfT - who control the standards - have always maintained that the figures quoted by manufacturers are for 'comparative purposes' and may not reflect the 'real world' economy that owners find. The figures quoted by the manufacturer are theoretical and found on the one and only vehicle tested.
Not one of the 5 BMWs I have owned (OK the Mini isn't a 'real' BMW) has achieved the manufacturer's stated data, except on calm days in the Summer on a level road. As you say, many forums (including this one) are full of disgruntled owners who aren't getting what the published figures say they should. Some have found using 'normal' fuel instead of 'performance' fuel improves things, others have found there is actually a fault, but most find the figures are complete bolox. Our Mini is also about 30% off its stated economy, but so are a large number of others with the same car.
It's not right, but it's a fact if life and will not change anytime before 2015 when the international consultation on more accurate ways of measuring fuel consumption that do equate to the 'real' world finishes. The current test is fundamentally flawed, but that is the 'agreed' test, and getting a more realistic one has been in the political 'too hard' bucket as it throws all the nice 'aren't we good with our carbon emissions' headlines straight down the toilet!!
It's certainly worthy of a 'deep & meaningful' discussion with the Dealer though..... >:(
And to answer your question, I ordered an X6 40D late last year, got some very sound advice from the folks on here (who saved me a considerable sum of money) and cancelled the order the next day. I got my deposit back in full.

My 40d is per the book more economical than my previous 3.0 X5.

I have just been out and driven my Brothers route to work, 3 miles country road followed by 15.5 miles dual carriageway and then 1.5 miles city.
On the way I set the cruise at 75mph and obeyed all other limits, on that trip I got 20.3mpg , with my 7 series I can guarantee that I would have got 32mpg
Reset and return journey I set the cruise at 65mph and again obeyed all other limits, this time I averaged 21.2mpg , with the 7 it would have been 33mpg+
100% not happy and will get the car taken back one way or another whatever it takes

hi I have an E53 & have found it more fuel efficient at 80 than 70 , 32 mph against 28.8 , is it quite hilly were you are as going up & down steep hills obviously effects it greatly , mine has an annoying habit of putting itself in a lower gear than it should be on the way down & 1 higher on the way up if you have the tip tronic on the way down stick it in manual & put it up a gear , & the reverse on the way up !
I am under no way saying crank it up past the speed limit !
The other option is brim fill & drive normal forget about the on board computer & do 2-300 miles then brim fill & work the mileage from there .
I was talking with a BMW dealer salesman last week I had read reports of poor fuel figures on the E70 twin turbo to which he said yes but the 40d , 30d have 8 speed autos & are have much more mpg but if you are going to spend £56000 why are you bothered about that !

My 4.8is would easily better these MPG figures.
