I rang BMW and they are refusing to give any details of what the software upgrade does.

I would say probably a good thing. This whole episode demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of security by BMW.  Hopefully the exposure means someone on the right side of the law will have a go at cracking it to see if they've actually fixed the root cause, rather than patched the immediate exploit.

Closes a rather large hole in the control software, but other than that they're keeping  :-X

As far as getting it properly sorted, the email exchange I had with the motoring press earlier in the year said Thatcham were involved in getting the fix sorted out.  I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be reassured by that though, especially considering these cars already had Thatcham 1 ratings.

Unless the supply of dodgy keys dries up alongside the availability of cheap programmers, then we can only hope that the software change is just one of a number of new security 'layers' that are being introduced by BMW and that important lessons have been learned.

What does slightly intrigue me though is that the X5 and X6 are being fixed already - and that's taken a year - yet it's going to take another 8 weeks to solve the other BMW models.  Must be a more serious issue in the rest of the range?

Got a call from my local dealer who did the 'quality upgrade' a few weeks back. Apparently they need it back in to update the 'quality upgrade'.

Not impressed with BMW at all.  It took them two attempts to get the chipping issue sorted as well.

Is there an emerging trend of updates being re-done???

Had my X5 40d updated today. Registered Sept 2011 so one of the last 'old' software X5's as Oct 2011 onwards alreday has the latest software.

The Service sheet states:

1. A0060941 Comfort Opening Conversion

2. U C/D

BMW Customer Service is shocking. Bloke turned up & left a new 3 series on my driveway, not for me to use he said.... this was just his transport to & from the dealership! I've only had a new 40d & 1 Series Sport from them in the past 12 months.
335d XD M Sport Touring
120d XD M

Past:
A4 Avant Blk Ed /Merc E350 / X5 E70 40d M Sport / C350 CDI Sport / 335d M Sport / 997 C2S / CLS 320 CDI / E46 M3  X2 / Z3 2.8 / 225 TTC / Mini Cooper JCW / 330ci / 325ci, Pug 205 1.9 GTI, Ren 5 Gt Turbo /  Nova Merit

Hmm, mine is better than that.  They do collect/return mine, but always offer a courtesy car should it be needed.

Got mine done today. Dealer expected to have it "all day" but it only took 2 hours for my July 2011 E70  :)

I got a letter a couple of weeks ago from my dealer:

"As part of ongoing quality analysis at BMW, it has been established that there is a possible software instability issue with this vehicle.  As such there is a small software coding update that needs to be done on your car, which includes removing a very seldom used window opening function from the driver's door lock.  This is the one where you use the mechanical key blade directly in the door lock barrel to open the windows electrically.

This function has been abused in the past by thieves who have violently broken the door lock barrel out and opened the windows, to gain access to the interior of the car.  After the update has been carried out you will still be able to open the windows by holding the unlock button on the key fob as before.  It therefore makes sense for us to offer this update to you now, rather than wait for the next time we see your car in for service.

The update is very small and we'll only need the car for around one hour."
