Glow Plug Dilemma

Post by Bargain Bucket » Fri Oct 05, 2012 5:34 pm

I finally got around to replacing the glow plugs and controller on my facelift 3.0d today. However one of the plugs snapped off as I attempted to remove it. It snapped between the thread and the flats for the socket so that the plug is still firmly in the head from the top of the threads down. So I'm now in a dilemma as to what to do about it. Do I :
a) leave it as it is and survive with 5 working plugs. I think it is gas tight.
b) have it taken to a specialist to have the broken plug drilled out.
c) attempt to drill it out myself (centre drill, tap with a left hand thread, and attempt to wind it out).

I hate bodges but.......

Opinions please my friends.

C if you think you can do it yourself. Don't leave it...

Not nice to have happen either, hope you get it sorted.

Got it sorted today. Paid a specialist engineering company to come out and do it. Glad I did although it was hard to find anyone with sufficient experience for the job. I can definitely recommend Modus Engineering based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. They did an excellent job of removing the snapped glow plug. I've now fitted 6 new ones and a new glow controller - no more errors reported by the scanner.

I paid him £200 to deal with the snapped plug. Took him just under 2 hours. Job well done. I was somewhat fearful that the process might fail and the head would have to come off.
