So being a novice at E70 is the 3.0sd the twin turbo and the 3.0d a single turbo one?
In which case where does a 3.5 diesel fit into it as that is also a twin turbo like the 4.0 diesel ?

The 'S' and 'SE' is just a higher/different spec......a bit like the original X5 and X5 Sport, just a trim thing. Different alloys, stiffer suspension, extra gizmos etc. I think the 'SD' is the later version which may be the 'cleaner' engine - cheaper to tax etc..someone on here should be able to confirm this last bit.
In any event they're all 3.0litre IL6 engines, but to differentiate between the single (30d) and twin turbo BMW called it the 35d - as they did across most of their ranges with that engine (335d, 535d etc).
Then just to completely confuse everyone the 35d model was dropped (except in the US), had a power increase, improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions, an engine variant/generation number change, new twin-turbo set-up installed and an 8-speed box fitted......and then failed to follow the previous naming conventions and became the xDrive40d..... ??? :crazy1:.........which is actually still a 3-litre, and still a twin-turbo....
Due to the cost of getting variants through the complexities of emissions regs in the US, they still do not have the xDrive40d version on sale and so are stuck with the 35d version only.
Clear as mud really..... :'(
