did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
we've seen how the X5 is copied in china, and how most good cars are copied and reproduced there in the local market. of course, resultant court cases were lost!
so i thought apple did well for whatever its worth.. although this is a convoluted case of all parties suing each other..
having said that, did apple shoot itself in the foot?

Re: did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
More than likely - and given the mess that the new Maps software is in - spectacularly so!!
There was a point in one of the other on line IT Newspapers (The Register) this morning that there are now over 200,000 patents around mobile phone, touch screen tech, icon, swipe etc methods of use and all it's doing is stalling development. And it's not as if (apart from stupidly high fines - only set in Apple's backyard in the US) it makes the slightest bit of difference to the end user anyway. If it works, then it works - I don't give a damn who owns what patent!!
I have an iphone simply because BMW locked itself in to their way and that means if you want the clever tech to work you're stuck with it. Otherwise I would most likely have an Android device - like the S3. I will say that the iPad is a hard act to follow though, so it will be interesting to see what the next round of devices look and work like - even if Windoze 8 is a less than ideal solution if you pick the 'wrong' CPU for your tablet device. ARM powered tablets won't run legacy Windows applications, but Intel powered ones will.
I'll give the iphone 5 a miss, and probably Win8 too. Let 4G settle down and hopefully multi-region capability come into being (anyone remember when your UK mobile phone only worked in parts of the UK and nowhere else in the world?) and the networks prove they can actually support the data throughput at a sensible data rate (and cost) before I step uo another generation.

Re: did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
I had an iPad bought me for Xmas 2011, so when my phone contract was up for renewal it just seemed to make sense to go with the 4s, although my better half had only just got the Samsung, and I must say its quite an amazing phone, bigger screen but lighter in weight, and android has really caught up with apps. As well.
Anyway iPhone it was, and I must say I've been ok with it, until this morning when I downloaded the latest software, iOS 6.0, to both my iPad and phone, bloody hell, what have I done, so slow its like having dial up again, and you can actually see the battery draining as you use it.
I only wish I'd read all the reviews before I did it, although a simple re-boot has helped a little.
Slightly off subject, but I'd thought I'd share it with you all.

Thank for the link Jaynana, I enjoyed the read.
I only have the original Galaxy S, but I really like it and won't be jumping to the iPhone camp any time soon.
We have an iPad2 which is great for casual browsing, and the wife has a 4s which she loves, but I just don't agree with paying the Apple Premium just to be in with the 'in crowd' on a device that really is no better than the phone I have. Iphone contracts are approx £35pm, I pay £13pm. When I upgrade in the new year, an S3 it will most probably be.
I do feel that the screens are becoming a little too large for comfortable use though. Before too long we will be sticking a 10" iPad style handset between our heads and shoulder, trying to hold a conversation without dropping it. It will however make spotting people on their phone whilst driving (a pet hate of mine) easier

Me too... :-[. Mind you the iPad 1s are slowing down now even on IOS5.1.1. I have found that the old single press of the home button followed by a quick double press (shows all the running Apps), hold on one of the icons to bring the shaking symbols and close symbol up and then closing everything unnecessary helps a lot.
Apple also have no way back either. Once done then you're stuck with it! I should think their CEO Tim Cook is apologising too.....the maps are dreadful! Both our iPhone4 versions are staying on 5.1.1!

IOS6 turns a lot of the data connections via the cellular network on by default in all sorts of Apps! In IOS5 and earlier the data over cellular functions weren't there. I went through mine and turned them all off again. Battery now lasts longer.

Luckily I didn't upgrade our ipads to iOS6, but my iphone 4s sadly copped it- the battery life is now amazingly dismal where before it was just adequate, and some of my favourite apps and games are playing up whereas they are running fine on the ipad with its iOS 5.
Very disappointing, but I still would not move backwards into the Android world for anything

Re: did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
If you can bear to be without it, Apple used to do battery changes or lower cost swaps to refurbished phones. Not sure if they still do, but your local Apple Store will know.

Re: did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
Havent had too many problems with apple so far.....had to swap out the 4g as the home button stopped working and it cost £129 so that wasnt so bad for something that was out of warranty.
Have had the i5 for nearly a week now and have to admit it isnt too bad.......certainly the camera is much better and chatting with siri is quite entertaining.......battery life still seems rubbish and the new dock connector is upsetting me.......Apple said you would get an adapter to the old 30pin but then said that was wrong.......for something that was £700 i would think that a £20 adapter should have been a must.
Fortunately the business contract was up for renewal so the phone was cheap. Not played with the pad enough yet with ios6 yet so cant really comment

Re: did apple shoot itself in the foot?..
I must say that after my initial fears everything seems to have settled down, the iPad is performing very well after a reboot, battery life will be monitored, but for now it's holding quite nicely.
My iPhone has had all sorts of things turned on after the software upgrade, so, as suggested, ( Thanx x5sport ), I've gone through and turned certain stuff off, it's just a case of seeing how it goes now.
I do hope they continue to perform well as I for one, love the iPad, and am prepared to put up with the iPhone, at least until my renewal.
