Got a pre-September 2011 BUILD E70 or E71? Read this!!

Post by X5Sport » Wed Sep 12, 2012 1:51 pm

Thread Link to E70 Forum

You need to read the latest posts (#23 & #24 are the key ones) on the thread as your car needs to be looked at by the Dealer!!  It applies to all pre-September 2011 (see label under bonnet) build cars.

Dealer collected and returned mine.  Took 12 hours according to them and cannot be interrupted....so time may depend upon options fitted/model year - dealer network speed etc etc.

A couple of other displays have changed on my iDrive too so I think the whole system got updated - except the maps - which makes the process longer again.  It was serviced at the same time.

Overnight does seem to be the Dealer 'preferred' choice though.. :ok:

Strange! Mine is going in on Monday, and the dealer said I could wait for the update to be completed- apparantly BMW have released this as a patch as opposed to a full system update! My CS rep said it would take 45mins.

Every other time they have had to reprog the car it takes them hours and hours- lets see.

Will know more on Monday and update after getting car back.

TBH It might take as long as infinity! I'm just waiting for the CSA to come over after i've had their 'complimentary' coffee- sorry sit but your car has locked up. We will need to leave it plugged in overnight. Oh and there's a bus stop accross the road!

Booked mine in for Monday, and they said that they only need it for two hours!

Does anyone know what it actually does?

Regards

Mark

It does something to disable/modify the code connected with the Comfort Access programming - even if you don't have Comfort Access.  I guess it's part of the common slug of programming the cars all get, and then different code 'blocks' are switched on or off depending upon what it on the car at build.

The actual details are not being revealed - sensibly.  No doubt some oink will get round it though.

I expect our Jas could do it given time, but I won't be calling him an 'oink', I'll leave that to you at the meet, pmsl :))

I am a member of our Neighbourhood Watch, and even they have sent a note out about it.

They do make a point of saying that BMW have stated that this is not an issue that is specific to their cars, which makes sense as it was in response to an EU directive so all manufacturers will have complied with it.

I do wonder if they left such a big gaping hole in their security though.

I feel sorry for all of the people that have lost their cars and hope that none of us become another statistic before we get the patch.

Regards

Mark

Just in case anyone was wondering what BMW are doing, the details are here;

http://keepyourcarsafe.co.uk/index.php/automotive-security/bmw-physical-security-update

In essence, all they're doing is removing the ability to lower the windows by the key barrel and that's it!
