Software upgrade..got a call to book car in. Anyone else recently?
Re: Software upgrade..got a call to book car in. Anyone else recently?
Well wife took it in this morning and waiting expecting to get it back within a hour ( was told a hour tops ) .
To get told after waiting 45 mins it will be 3 hours , she was a little pissed off to told after sitting there 45 mins .
And finally back tonight and of the phone to them it needs to go back in as it showing up a rear brake pad in 6000 miles , when we have a key printout showing 1400 miles ago it had 13000 left on them , so they now have to now measure and check the rear brake pads .
Wife is a little delicate at the mo lol ::)

Software upgrade..got a call to book car in. Anyone else recently?
Interesting. I thought I saw some comments last week saying the software patch was an overnight job? I'm booked in for Friday and the dealer is saying 1 hour so it seems inline with your experience.
Re: Software upgrade..got a call to book car in. Anyone else recently?
Wish I could get my wife to take mine in ). Instead it's going to entail a shlepp home on the tube and then same back out there again when done ! Although I at least I avoid the risk of delicate wife syndrome . Although she might have to deal with a mighty cross husband !
I was also told it should only take 45 mins. However these system updates can take longer than expected. Revising the satnav maps requires a total system re-install which was an overnight job on one occassion and an all day job on another.

Mine goes in tomorrow for the update, originally when I booked it in they said it was a 45 minute job. They have now called me to say they will need it for the day as it takes longer than they thought to do, they also said as my car hadn't had any kind of update since 2009 there may be other things that were updated at the same time? To which I responded I thought any updates were carried out at service intervals, apparently not you only get your car updated if it has a problem and requires it. So now I am totally confused as to what they are doing but it will take the day to do ::)

Mine was also in for the first service since new in 2010, and it appears that all the updates required to not just the 'security' but other things have also gone in. My Bluetooth and Media System software version numbers have all changed. At a guess they had to do all those updates and then apply the patches.
Shame I didn't get new maps too......£200.. it can live with the 2011 ones for now!
As I said earlier, my Dealer collected and returned the car to me. And no it wasn't a 19-year old tech driving it, but a 50+ delivery driver.... (a bit like me really...... )

I spoke with BMW in Battersea today and mine is booked in for early Oct for the update (its the soonest they can do any work). They said they need it for a full day.
On another note, they want to charge me £15 for insurance on a courtesy car. Bit annoyed I have to do this update in in the first place, let alone pay for a lone car too. Not impressed BMW UK. Surely you guys should be picking up the tab in this case?

Re: Software upgrade..got a call to book car in. Anyone else recently?
Had my 2007 E70 upgraded last week. Took 3 hours. I asked what was done in the upgrade and all I was told was that the alarm system was enhanced to make it more sensitive?!?

I think it's a case of:
A) only a few people actually understand what was done so the chances of the folk at the garage understanding what was done is slim.
B) BMW don't exactly want to publicise the fault any more than it already has been to limit the chances of those whose system is still compromised having their car nicked!

Re: Software upgrade..got a call to book car in. Anyone else recently?
I've had no contact from my dealer but this morning got this email from my insurance company (Axa) entitled "Protect Your BMW Against Theft"...
Now my car's booked in for next month, the earliest they can do it, and I've been told it'll take all day... At least the loan car is free
So I phoned them to be told that I would have been contacted "in due course" and that "we've only done two cars so far". So much for German efficiency. You may have seen in the news recently that some BMW car models are unfortunately affected by a security flaw. As a customer and owner of a BMW we wanted to make you aware of this so you can take the necessary precautions and help prevent thefts of BMWs.
BMW has advised that the security breach only affects models which were built from 2006 to September 2011.
The security flaw lies with the electronic key. A device now exists which enables its user to access a car's on-board computer and program a blank key. In the wrong hands, a thief can steal a BMW in just a few minutes using the device.
How you can reduce the threat of car theft:
BMW has announced that they will offer a free upgrade of security features for cars affected. Therefore we would recommend that you contact your BMW service department or your nearest BMW dealer who will be able to advise you further.

Any issues ring BMW GB on 0800 083 4397.
I only knew about it because of this forum and 'access' to a friendly sales person. They did however ring me four days AFTER the work had already been done!!
It's in this week's Auto Express again too. X5 & X6 being fixed - everything else will be 'another 8 weeks'. The general opinion is that BMW have taken far too long to admit and then fix a long known problem. But then if it doesn't affect safety, they don't have to say or do anything.
I hope those who's insurers have taken the 'you can't steal a car without the keys' line as has also been reported, now have to eat humble pie where the Owner can produce both keys - unless of course one's a clone....
