According to the manual (and my experience) the GM 5L40E will lock in 5th if you are driving (ie all solenoids will be powered down - defaults to 5th) then sets safety fluid circuit to lock it in 4th after a stop go scenario.

Thanks for the clarification......

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
So i got a call from the garage this morning and they tell me that they pinpointed the problem to the throttle body. They tell me that it will need a new one, and the new one requires re-programming and all sorts of things and the bill is going to be including labour around £900. I told that I will think about it (purely to see if I can find anywhere that's cheaper).
Does that sound about right?
Would anyone happen to know anywhere that maybe I can get it done for less?

Is it cracked? What are they saying is wrong with the throttle body?

Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
All i got told is that there is an electronic failure of the throttle body and they need to replace it. I even enquired about a refurbished one, as they told that parts alone are going to cost around £500 but I was told that getting a recon part is not possible.
Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
Have a quick trawl on a couple of sites, eBay etc. you will soon find one, it may not be new, but probably cheap enough to risk trying a second hand one, I also think you can get them through the likes of GSF, that would come with a warranty as well.
Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
don't know this part at all, but in general, if u can risk the cost of having to fit again in case the part is found to be faulty, there are bmw breakers who sell with warranty.
i know one with whom i've exercised the warranty and they've promptly replaced the part, no questions asked, no postage cost on me.
issue like i said - is cost of re-fitting in case the part they supply is found faulty. cos they don't necessarily check when they ship.

Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
Two Hundred and twenty nine quid from ECP, but out of stock at moment.
I had an 8 series 4.4 with the M62 engine in. I was messing one day as I had an engine management problem, was going into limp mode after4000 revs when booting it. went around pulling off sensors and checking wires and connections, pulled the connector of the throttle body and that caused it to flash up an engine check problem,DSC etc,as its linked into DSC as it shuts revs off the revs to correct a skid ,wheelspin etc.
My problem was a collapsed cat on one exhaust bank not letting the gas out fast enough. So wasnt the throttle body.
The throttle body has a positional sensor to tell the computer how much the butterfly valve is open.
certain cars you can replace the sensor alone, but not sure about BMW's.
I think they are easy to fit, so not sure why they are quoting so much. just behind the MAF sensor

Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
I had the same problem when I bought my 2002 petrol e53 last year,a local indie replaced the throttle body for £450,as far I know with a genuine BMW part, they said it is a common problem with these engines.
Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
Well got the car back and so far it is running fine. I do feel like I got done on the price side of things (I requested that I get all the old parts back and all I got was the throttle body which I've seen on eBay go for around £150). The excuse that I got was that it was a genuine BMW part + reprogramming brought the cost of the part to around 500, including the diagnostics and labour the final tally was 750+VAT a total of 900. But i thought to hell with that, the fact that my car is back in good working order hopefully made me forget about getting done by a mechanic.
So it looks like the riddle has been solved, it was the throttle body that caused my car to go crazy and not want to be driven....
It now looks like I will definitely try to tackle the rear subframe bushes myself....

Re: Engine Failsafe Program, Trans Failsafe Program, ABS, DSC
Similar problem on my 2004 4.4i sport, ignored a couple of time as had spuriouse warnings on several other BMW, however on third occurrence the banging and crashing from the gearbox/transmission as it tried to sort itself out prompted me to take in to the dealer. Found to be the Alternator throwing all sorts of voltages into the system. One wonders how many items are affected by this fault as after replaceing the alternator it drives and feels like a different vehicle, or is all in the mind.
I did mind the cost and the fact that this is the first alternator that I have had to replace since a Joe Lucas (Prince of Darkness) versionl in 1971 !!!??
