Door rattle-something's loose on or under the door card-howdo I get at it?

Post by storminmike » Wed Aug 29, 2012 7:51 pm

When shutting the drivers door on the wife's X5 there's this quite solid loose rattle sound

It's not tinny like say a wire or thin rod, it's a more solid and heavier sound. I know on mine if the window is down the glass rattles a bit but it's not that sound either.

What I do notice is that one (at least) of the door plug/clips near the hinge is either broken or missing. I could be two so that could be letting the door card bounce or wobble.

I've had door cards off my old E36 but that didn't have airbags and the like. I'm always wary too of ripping plugs and clips clean out of the back and knackering the door card

I can onyl think that the whole card is under restrained by virtue of not enough clips (why missing I don't know...history hmm) and perhaps there are heavy items loose behind it too

Is this easy to remove without faff and what's hanging in the back of the door?

Cheers....Mike

It could be missing clips causing it to move about and rattle.  Does this door trim removal instruction help?  From the TIS.  The airbag unit is bolted to the door itself.

Thanks for that, now I know where all the screws are.. I found this (window regulator) panel removing video which helped visualize it a lot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA_xpjGp ... sults_main

The door handle attachment looks hidden and seems like one of those things you have to see in the flesh to understand

There are many clips too....not sure how many but quite a lot..and two versions too

The rear of the panel seems not to have a lot hanging off it so it could be just a lack of clips

Installation:
Clips (1) are longer than the other clips.
Clips (1) are gray, the other clips are white.
Fit all clips with sealing ring.
If necessary, replace faulty clips

this might help.

i had this issue, was planning a diy job, when i gave the car to jason recently for a diff. job he also noticed and commented on it and i shamefully said 'yeah can u get that fixed for me too'.

this is a common 'clip' issue inside the door, search xoutpost i've seen other threads too on how to fix.
