3.0d cranking taking longer....

Hi all, any help much appreciated. Right, over past week I've noticed the car just seems to take that bit longer to start from turning key. It takes about two seconds of cranking before starting. Car is running superb, no issues, no things untoward, bar this??? I'm going to get the meter out tomorrow and check voltage on battery with engine off, which should be over 11.5v I assume to be tidy. Then whilst running, think it should be showing 13.5 v . Will double check this on google in a bit. One other thing, car randomly wouldn't open on the remote lock this evening, no buttons working. So unlocked door with key, didn't open the door though, then locked car via keyfob and it worked fine. Linked any way?? Ie battery on it's way out?? Help much appreciated. Anyone else had anything similar to this? Thanks again

Your suspicions seem to be correct - the battery is most likely the cause. How old is it?

I had the central locking issue once too. It was the battery on it's way out.Watch out fo rthe alarm too - that goes off of it's own accord too!

You shouldn't pay more than Â£100 for new high quality one if yo doa DIY which takes about 20 mins to swap out. Last year my Bosch Silver cost me that.

Sank thanks for the reply!!! Think it's the original, almost certain it is!!! So 2003, and 85000 miles!! And wife just told me when I was sleeping off nights yesterday, the alarm was going off on it's own!!! Right I will buy new one in the morn, any do's and donts with these when changing battery?? Nice 1

Not difficult to do but get the size right and the terminals should be the round type - think they all are now.

Remind me which one you have? The diesel? Think they were 85 Ah and you want to get an equivalent or more - mine was/is 95 Ah.

If petrol, higher the better - even the diesel one is fine.

For that age you did well!

Nothing to worry about, get the floor out, then spare, then compressor needs to be unbolted (2 bolts, 2 nuts), pivot it back away from you (carefully - don't snag any air lines), positive off first, then earth - swap out and then reverse. Positive first, negative second - leave for 15 mins to let the iBus set or just go for it. If you have weird behaviour just leave it for 15 mins.

Just a PITA to crawl into and lift out - doing that with the lower tailgate open is hard. Here is a pic of the battery I got:

dont touch a screw driver across the 2 terminals....

dont forget yout radio code when u reconnect...

dont damage and hoses from the air suspension when removing your metal helmet thingybob>>>>

im gonna be going in about my bootwell tommorow for some dvd player installation so new 12v feed from the battery is required!

Try Costco for the battery, used them in the past and found them very well priced.

Sanj, thanks very much for that, yep know all the do's and dont's for battery swaps etc, just wanted to know if there was anything specific for the ibus systems etc as there clearly is from this!! Cheers guys, will get back tomorrow. phiggy I will give them a ring, aswell as a few others just to check quotes etc. was starting to panic that it was something sinister like high pressure fuel pump possibly?? And other symptoms were just anomalies!!! the battery has done well I agree!! Right, off to bed now. Thanks again. Get back tomorrow night let you know how I got on.

Well, checked voltage on battery, 12.1 volts with engine off, and 13.6 volts with it running. Which suggested to me battery was shot as it should be 12.8 volts and 14.4 upwards respectively. So bought new battery, Â£79 100amp hour. fitted last-night and dam it same problem!! Bit more investigation. It seems a cold start is fine i.e. takes straight away, but it's the warm start it's suffering from??? Any ideas???

I've been watching this post and I didnt think it would be the battery. As for what it is I'm not sure either. When did you last have the engine serviced/filters changed ? may something as simple as that.

I'd get it booked in to a local garage and plugged in for a diagnostics check.

Could be a couple of glow plugs knackered and this would show. IIRC the more that have failed, the faster the others will fail.

Not sure how needed they are in warmer weather mind you, but they are still used.

I suggested/guessed glow plugs or battrey aswell but wouldn't it 'play up' more on a cold start if the glow plugs were damaged???
