Few bits needed

Post by energydj » Mon Jul 30, 2012 11:48 pm

Long time lurker, so I thought it was about time I joined this site. I have a 2008 X5, and there was once a time that I would change my car every couple of years but those days have come and gone!  ;)

I will be holding on to my E70 for some time to come, so I know have to replace a few bits! I saw on another thread that pagid are some of the better pads. But I have some other questions.

Brake Discs: Am I better off getting OEM or what brand is better? I have read here about some brands of disc would squeal more.

I also need to get a battery, again Im looking for recommendations on the better brand? Varta

Hello and welcome to the forum......... :D

I believe the discs are either Pagid or Textar on the E70 as they are on the E53.

A lot of folks use the Bosch Silver range for batteries - either S5 or S6.  Varta batteries are fine - and look suspiciously similar too..  ;)

The battery has to be paired to the car on the E70/71 as the on-board electronics supposedly 'monitor' the charging health as well as battery state.  I don't know how easy this is to do and it's most likely buried in the iDrive somewhere.  Whatever happened to undo connections, remove & replace battery, reconnect!!  Life used to be so simple. :(

To register a new battery you will need this to be carried out with a good quality diagnostic tool can't be done via car controls.
Also make sure you get the correct replacement battery , right size and rating and need to check if it's an AGM battery or not as this will confuse the power management module.

There was something else that I was looking for. I wanted the updated maps for the E70, ordered from some site, got a DVD and nothing worked! Ok, so I don't want to pay for the legit BMW disc, so any recommendations for buying the sat nav discs?

Thanks for all your help. The quest continues.

If I wanted to change the front fog lights to xenons, is it a big job and also where do I get said lights?

Any recommendations for steering wheel refurbishment?
