My mate has an M5 E39, and he had his steering angle sensor re-calibrated using a snap on diagnostic machine.

StevoX5 - are you a BMW technician?  You seem to know your way around the cars very well.  :)

[quote="stevox5"]
What did the garage do to get rid of the fault code for the oil change in the transfer box?

I would get the car back to them so they can test the signal from the steering angle sensor with their diagnostic tool whilst turning the wheel lock to lock,if this is ok at time of test check the witting connection to the sensor.
If this checks out I would recode the sensor (if they have the correct equipment) then recalibrate it again and try that first(has worked for me in the past)
If fault persists may need a new sensor. Hard to be more help without checking it personally but from the info you have given that would be my approach .

Good luck

hello steve, sorry i didn't see this msg earlier.

to reset - the indy just reset the errors using his machine (red coloured about a foot x 6 inches, with a green digital display and yes/no buttons mainly - don't know what its called)

he also straightened the steering (and the wheels) and pressed the button on the machine which he said should re-calibrate the steering angle sensor.

indy's gone on holiday for 2 weeks!

light's still on. last i hooked up the scanner was the day of my last post it indicated the steering angle sensor error above (004 in LEW and 5EB0 in ABS).

thing is also that he knows i've got 'online friends', and he once told me that if me and my friends knew so much to get it done myself  :-X

i'll let him come back and get the sensor checked up i guess..

another thing might be - do u or anyone know of a good indy near north-west london? that might be the other way to find out..

cheers

If he turned round to me and said that I'd be finding a new Indy regardless!

Hi J

The machine you describe sounds like an old model SNAP ON  scanner that is used by indipendant garages to be a basic fault code reader for most makes and models , this type of machine does not offer in depth functions needed for the sort of issue you have.It may very well have the calibration function listed but from experience I would not be 100% happy with the reliability of it for this job.

Bearing in mind the eqipment used and the apparent attitude of the guy from what you have said I would take the car to a reputable BMW dedicated specialist with either proper BMW GT1 diagnostic gear or Autologic, both these systems will definatly carry out the calibration correctly and could reprogram the sensor too if the need arises as I suggested previously.Any indipendant with either machine I have mentioned would also indicate to me that they are serious about the brand and should have a good knowlage in it to have invested in this gear.

I think taking this route will pay off and put the issue to bed.

Good Luck

Steve

hi steve, that's very vital information...

the fact that the indy may not have the right diagnostic tools to figure out what needs to be done worries me.

unfortunately i don't know any other indy's around here..,

i wouldn't even mind travelling a bit to go to the right indy, so if you or anybody knows a good bmw indy around north-west london pls let me know.

i might as well start with a google search and a few phone calls at a minimum i think.

i take it 'BMW GT1 diagnostic gear' or 'Autologic' are the things to look for?

thx

Update on this - checked it out at jasons. First tried to recaliberate. Then the test drive. Went well almost the full drive but then the light came up again! Hooked on to the diagnostic tool again, error had come back.

Now booked in for a sensor replacement on tues, along with some other stuff. Other stuff that needs fixing:
- front wheel judder under high speed braking. Bushes suspected, plus front tires need replacing!
- hand brake passed last mot with an advisory. Hoperfully only an adjustment.

Will end up with a massive hole in my pocket this month..

Jason, if you see this - thanks for everything:) thanks others for sending me that way:)

Bringing up an old thread here but as it seems to be solved and is the only one on the net i can find that has the same symptoms i'm hoping the OP can help.

I have

54C6 VTG Oil Wear
55C4 No message from DSC

I did have steering angle sensor too but after having the wheel alignment done and the codes cleared and it re calibrated (i could see the angles changing on the screen as the wheel was turned) that has now gone.

I cannot get the 4x4 light off so one of the above is causing it.

There isn't much on the DSC code but my guess is it will be that.

Can anyone throw any suggestions at me.

hi there, lucky i saw this, been a while :)

your error codes are exactly as i had, and i can tell you these don't cause the 4x4 light (these errors never disappeared from my system, although i managed to get the light to go off).

my 4x4 light went away when the Steering Angle Sensor was replaced.

note what that means - the Steering Angle Sensor fault is reported elsewhere. you might want to look for it (although u say that you fixed it - if you read the thread even i thought i had fixed it by re-calibrating, only to eventually replace it when the light kept coming back).
