That is bad !!!

Sorry to hear that, only been in that in France once as a child and we drove the car into a barn to avoid the damage.

Must have been very dangerous if you had walked through it though as it would be like being stoned :(

The owners son living next door was hit on the head by one, it knocked him over and he broke his arm.

He's a 6ft US Navy Helicopter pilot so by no means small and weedy!

Damn. Glad you're all ok though. Can imagine the kids being a little scared as the noise alone must have been immense with those things hitting down.

These were the images someone over on another forum posted up from Leicester back in June:

Wow !

Sorry to here this. I know one of the truly best PDR guys around and he's 25 mins from you. He does work for main dealers locally on retail stock I firmly trust his work & integrity.

If local dealer bodyshop south of your home considers PDR they are very likely to use him albeit at increased cost to you.

Once back, if you consider PDR and want a professional opinion/quote from the person prepared to do the work , (independent of dealership), then let me know & I will pass you his details.

Hope rest of trip goes safely.

Thanks

The car is a mess and Ruth is gutted :(

Let's see how we get on when we get back and I'll call if need be.

Regardless we need to meet up soon :)

Fortunately we do.

There will be no problems claiming but its what happens to the car when we get back is the million dollar question.

Damage from hailstones

Post by Rusty » Tue Aug 07, 2012 1:28 am

Must have been gutted to see the damage, just glad nobody was hurt.

Not sure you could put 'hail stones' on the claim form, maybe 'ice boulders' instead?

Hope you get a satisfactory result from the insurers.

Damage from hailstones

Post by mogsyman » Mon Aug 13, 2012 8:45 pm

Update......

Been to a locally bodyshop and the local BMW dealer.

Both were amazed at the amount of damage. Although some are small dents, every panel bar one needs fixing. If they both have their way all bar two will require new panels, the roof is a bugger as are the doors and other bits...... :(

I've not had any estimates yet in writing but they are both talking at best guess of somewhere around £20k and 8 weeks to fix it. Direct Line have said that unless the cost is more than 60% of the invoice value of a replacement car they'll repair not replace. So the chance of a new car are slim at best.

I'm trying not to be too fussed, the car will be checked within a inch of its life when it's ready and should any dents be missed, they'll be put right either then or after the handover. I'm going to have a fight with that point but will make Direct Line aware of my thoughts verbally and in writing.

I'll update when I have more info.

I am sure some would do all they could to try to ensure quotes were over 60% of sale invoice price.

I have sent pics to (not forum link) to PDR guy for a 2nd opinion.

I am not optimistic tbh , (even though he excels at what he does), but I value his work & integrity.

Please hang fire until I get a response...............even if it confirms your bodyshop repair fears.

That's a shame - a new one would probably take about the same amount of time too.....was wondering how you were getting on last night.

I forgot to comment the last time I saw this thread.

Those pictures look amazing and horrific, at least no-one was hurt.

I was wondering if the newer BMWs are made with thinner metal to help make them lighter, were other cars near you damaged as much or even more? (Judging by the few parking dings in my old E53, the older ones weren't made too strongly!)

Without a shadow of a doubt!

The next gen (3rd) X5 is supposedly going to be Aluminium, and the current versions already have plastic front wings anyway.....sorry make that 'high quality lightweight body panels'......yeah that's still plastic.  I was surprised BMW didn't go to Aly a lot earlier.  Landrover and Audi made the change years ago.

When Ford introduced the first front WD Escort in 1983, I was working for Surrey Police and we had to have someone sitting inside the car to stop the roof collapsing when we were drilling the roof for the blue lights and radio aerials.  You could actually move the blue light through a 6" arc without damaging the car or paint!!  No such problem with its predecessor.
