bosch s4

Post by malc1950 » Thu Aug 09, 2012 9:04 pm

i have a bosch s4 battery that i fitted 7mths ago that doesn't hold the charge , today i left my tailgate open for around 1 hour with the interior lights on, i then tried to turn on the wabasto heater on the OBC but it wouldn't let me put a tick in the box i then started the X it started but only just the battery seemed very low, i tried again to tick the wabasto heater box on the OBC and this time it let me and the park heater fired up, i was on holiday for 11 days and when i got back the car started first time no problem so i dont think its got a drain on the battery i think its a voltage load problem as i have had a problem with the wabasto heater turning its self off for sometime, will get it drop tested tomorrow.

I see a lot of failures on these units, which surprises me.

If the E53 is 'awake' you would be surprised just how much the systems draw!  I can't remember the figures for that version, but the E71 can draw 60A with the key in.

I would have expected the lights to shut off after a while though.  They used to on mine.  Just under 20 mins of no activity and all went off.  We're you opening doors etc and so kept the car 'awake'?

yes lights go off after a while.

also webasto start-up sequence has a voltage check. so if the voltage is low it won't start.

Yes it would have been awake as i shut and opened the tailgate and doors several times within the hour the key was not in the ignition, but it still doesn't explain why i have a problem with my wabasto shutting down after 45sec or so but it will run all day if i put a live feed to pin one on the heater, do you think the Bosch s4 is up to the job or should i have got the s5 ? , i am down the motorway every day doing 40 miles a day, it seems to be charging ok and like i mentioned it was parked 11 days while i was on holiday and it started no problem so there cant be a drain on the battery.

If the volts are fine then all I can think of is temperature, as in the outside air temp is higher than the Webasto will work at.  It's a guess, but kind of thinking along the lines of the unit only kicks in below an upper air temp limit.

If only being used as the block heater rather than the full-fledged additional heater it only works below a preset temp limit.  It might just be that the unit takes a reading from the air temp sensor and decides it's too warm to run perhaps?  Only a guess though so may be totally whacko suggestion... :-[

it may be the temperature. webasto has 2 methods of starting up:

1. normal operation/command issued by IHKA through the k-bus (pin 2 i think): usual start up sequence includes:
1.1. outside temperature check (below 5c)
1.2. coolant temperature check (below 60c)
1.3. i think it does an input voltage check as well, not sure.

2. telestart operation/direct +12v to pin 1:
2.1. webasto certainly bypasses the temperature check.
2.2. it prob. bypasses the voltage check as well, not too sure.

this 'may' be the reason.

ps
i'm still learning and haven't got mine working yet. have heaps and heaps of info though, just can't find the PCB. i just might buy a second-hand full unit from a breaker and switch components..

must go home - just remembered another test!

I thought it was the S5 that should go on the X5? If you have a battery tester you can see if it is the battery that is the problem or if it is the alternator on its way out and not giving a high enough charge to the battery.

Telestart t91 now thats a different story, bought one off ebay shipped from Romania the plug it came with did not match up with the one in the boot [ not a problem cut the plug off and then connected the 3 wires] pulled fuse 86 put it back in pressed the off button on the remote to program it, but i have to stand 2 to 3 foot from the car for it to work then it only runs the wabasto for around 30 to 40 sec doesn't fire up ,
checked the remote battery thats ok but it has no range at all for some reason and there known for having a very long range don't know if its conflicting with the reverse camera that was fitted by the last owner.  :wall:

The s4 has 5 or 10 more amps per hour than the factory fitted battery so should be up to the job
have checked the alternator and its putting out around 14.4 volts give or take

telestart works by giving +12v to pin 1. no difference.

my point being giving +12v method may be bypassing the temperature and/or voltage checks.
