Bluetooth: Not getting to "Bluetooth Pairing"

Post by Legeek » Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:45 pm

Hi,
I have search bluetooth problems but have not found the solution to this issue:
I have followed the instructions in the booklet ie:
1 - press the button with the man and the waves in front of his mouth for 3 seconds with Key in pos 0
2- key in pos 1 release the button after 3 seconds
And I would expect to see bluetooth pairing at this point but nada.
If I go to the menu and telephone I have the "Activate phone" message.

Any idea why the "bluetooth pairing" does not appear ? Seems like I cannot get to the point where the bluetooth module searches for phones in the vicinity.

Have you cleared out all the existing pairings?  If the four devices limit has been hit then you cannot add any more without clearing out the old ones.

Do you have BMW scanner 1.4.0?

Where are you based? Someone local may have it and can help out

Thanks for your replies.
X5sport: I do not get to clear previous phones even if there were any as I do not get to the "bluetooth pairing" message.
I am based in Rayleigh in Essex. I do not have BMW scanner. Would not mind getting it if it was of any use to an average motor DIY'er.
It looks like they are lots of offers on ebay but I suppose some are ok and some others are not ?

Bluetooth: Not getting to "Bluetooth Pairing"

Deffo worth getting, im sure someone will post a link to a reputable seller on the bay.  You can enter pairing mode with it too.  If you were closer I'd have done it for you.

Bluetooth pairing is pretty hard to do.  I assume your using the Bluetooth button under the arm rest and not the steering wheel?

Yep I am using the bluetooth button under the arm rest.
No time till the week-end now but I will take the phone cradle out and check if some connector has worked itself lose. I have seen a great post on this forum on this subject and it looks like a 10 minutes job.
I have check connections on the bluetooth module too and this seems ok.
Must be somehow working since, although I do not get the "bluetooth pairing" message, I am getting "searching" message and "activate phone".

Check the connection as you have mentioned and also the module in the boot as you never know if someone has removed it. Otherwise you will need to use a scanner or the like to see if it highlights the issue.

OK I have checked the connection under the craddle and it is fine. In actual fact looks like on later E53's the cable has been secured to ensure it does not work itself loose.
The module is there are connections looks good to me
All fuses good.
Now waiting for the Scanner 1.4.0. to see what else gives.

Bluetooth: Not getting to "Bluetooth Pairing"

Post by CondorX5 » Fri Jul 27, 2012 9:30 am

Have you tried keeping the button pressed for around 8 or 9 seconds while turning the ignition key to position 2?  Don't release the button inbetween. Ie Depress the button for a few seconds, then turn ignition to pos 2 while button still depressed and keep button depressed for further 6 to 8 secs while watching to see the BT Pairing message pop up. Worth a try. I had similar problems with my BT module and it was eventually replaced under warranty, new one is much easier to pair.

Just did and still nothing. I will wait until I get the Scanner and hopefully find out what is wrong.
I am not too worried to be honest. I just want to get it to work but probably won't use it often. I still think that it is way too much of a  distraction when you are handling 2 tonnes of German ironmongery at 60+ mph to be safe anyhow you use it.
Just my opinion obviously

Cheers DirtyMonkey  ;) ; I got the right button. I even dismantled the cradle and activated the switch internally just in case the button did not make good contact.
Only I did not do so far is take a part the storage compartment and see what happens there since the cable disappears somewhere down there I would think there is, in pure BMW tradition another connector ?
Anyone gave that a shot ?

Re: Bluetooth: Not getting to "Bluetooth Pairing" SORTED!!!!

Post by Legeek » Sat Aug 04, 2012 4:58 pm

Sorted it!!!!
That is really strange even for BMW who sometimes has a way to "entertain" you with their computing concepts.
Anyhow here is what I did:
ordered BMW SCAN 1.4.0 and installed on my laptop (did not work and had to download the software from AP SOFT) .
Then run diags on telephone no problems found except for "pairing faliures",
get into bluetooth settings
clear all paired phones
change passkey
set pairing on using BMW scanner and not the recommended way in the manual
got wife's SAMSUNG Galaxy S3 registered on no problem
works fine now.

I thought I'd share this as I have not see this resolution applied before.
BMW scanner find a few issues but this is for another thread methinks.
