check brake linings message but...........

Post by ajo.v8 » Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:42 pm

Hi all, i got a phone call from the wife today saying the x5 was saying 'check brake linings'. So i had a quick look on the forum to find its a message to let you know your pads have worn down. Iv just got home and had a good look at the pads and they all look fine.

So my question is what next do i need to look for?

Thanks guys and girls.

You need to check the inner pads tbh as the sensor is on that side. It has been known for the inner pad to wear more heavily. If not a pad wear issue then could just be a break in the sensor wire, etc.

Thanks for that raj, i will get it up on the ramps on saturday and get the wheels off and have a good look over the pads. Is there any way of seeing the inside pads without taking the wheels off?

Not really, you will have to take the wheels off to have a proper look. The inners always seem to get more abuse than the outers.

Wheel off unfortunately. But best to do that anyway just to check the sensors too, etc if the pads are ok.

I've had a few spurious messages which turned out to be where a wire from the sensor had become trapped in the junction box on the nearside front wheel arch trim. Re-fitted and a liberal squirt of WD and all has been well since. I noticed it when I pulled my wheels off to check the inside pad.

By the way the sensors are on the nearside front and the offside rear so these should be the first 2 wheels that you remove.

In the end I just ordered some new pads and sensor from ECP. With the 31% off I got it all for £37  8). Took it round to my friends garage and fitted them myself in a few hours. Job done well until the bike ones need doing.

On both sides the pads had worn a lot more on the inside. I think the next job is to do the back ones b4 it set the sensor off then the rocker cover gasket in a few weeks time.

The wife's did the same a few weeks back, I was away working at the time so got her to take pictures. From the pics both front and back looked like they still had 2-3mm left so not much help. I ordered front and back Pagids from ECP with the 30% brake discount and when I removed them the inners were at about 1mm all around.

Rears are a pain in the arse as you can't get to the lover caliper boot, the shock is in the way. You need to undo the caliper carrier bolts.

All sorted now guy. I did the back ones this weekend. I tried to save the sensor but no luck so had to get a new on from ECP. I think it cost me about £75 to change the front and rear pads and sensors. Another job done just need to sort the rocker cover gasket and the newest problem the radio going off :(

Thanks guys.
