Tyre wear

Went Under my X today to fit a new PDC and noticed i had tyre wear on the inner of both rear tyres,
hopefully if i get the tracking sorted i should get a bit longer out of the tyres before i have to change them, i had the tracking done 4mths ago at a local garage that does laser line because i noticed a bit of scuffing on the N/S/F tyre outer edge so now i dont know if the rear wear is since then or they sorted it,

How much wear is there? The rears do run negative camber anyway but depending upon the type of wear then it could be the toe that's out.

Agreed with above plus was it a proper 4 wheel alignment that was carried out before? A lot of garages I have worked in have all the equipment but most mechanics only know how to do front wheel alignment I.e toe in and toe out. When it comes to rear camber they are clueless.

Any knocks and bumps from the back?  Worn bushes will make it worse

That is the problem they have these fancy machines but can they use them most of the time NO they cant,
regarding damage i would say no as the car has had one owner before me and i have spoke to him and he told me the car has never been in a accident, think i will google 4 wheel alignment then try to find reviews on the garage then go from there, thanks all

The standard rear camber setting causes wear on the inside edges. It's meant to be this way to make the car handle better.

If the rest of the tyre is still showing loads of life then you have a problem, and it's possible that some rear suspension wear is causing excessive negative camber.

I had my camber set as positive as it could be to reduce tyre wear, it was still -0.5 degrees so should maintain some of the handling improvements from neg camber.

Yes loads of tread left at least 5mm, got it booked in with BMtec Manchester 3rd August when i get back from my holidays, they are doing a full inspection running gear bushes ect, they told me they cant do the rear camber as they dont have the equipment for that , i have found a garage that specialise in 4x4 wheel alignment and rear camber so they are going to sett it all up for me on the 5th Aug,  :holdbreath:

Interesting reading. My E70 with 20" wheels is also wearing significantly more on the inside on the rears. I think they're still okay but not far off.

Car is 2 years old next week but only done 12k.

Worse though was the fronts which I happened to spot the other day. Outside inch has worn out completely whilst the rest of the tyre has loads of depth. I suspect this is unsafe / illegal so will be replacing this week.

Any benefit to going through BMW as opposed to independent?

That is still legal - 1.6mm depth limit, over 75% of tyre width. Looks like rest of tyre is well over wear bars.

Alignment needs don though - tyres could be removed and swapped over

Good call. I will ring a few places to see the cost of flipping the front and back tyres. Would be handy to avoid the £1k+ on tyres for a few more months.

that tyre are prob just about  legal but hardly any good.

In the end I replaced all 4 as the rears had signs of ageing and bad a couple of screws in them - one on the shoulder.

They put the car on one of those laser alignment rigs and it was all over the place and off the scale on one dimension or another on all the wheels!  Explains why the wear was so bad given only 12k. Tread depth was 0/6/6 on both fronts.

I haven't had any bad potholes or kerb strikes that would explain it so makes me wonder how well it came out the factory. Given a new set of tyres is £1k+, in future I will consider testing any new car within days and if its out charge the dealer!

To identify it properly you need to deload the suspension by either jacking up under the air spring on the bracket, or just deflating them by undoing the pipe in the boot.

With suspension loaded (even with car jacked up) it will take all the play out and look OK....
