Post by shadrack » Fri Jul 06, 2012 2:45 pm

Anyhow, as title I'm no stranger to high milage cars my 05 x5 110k, our 325ci had 150k but anyway my lass has found a tidy 320cd, full spec nappa leather sport, heated seats the list goes on, price very good fbmwsh 1 owner from new we really couldn't see a down side, then the motorway milage was 230k!! Its pretty local so might just go for a look and the pictures it looks nice, any thoughts

Would need to be very low price and I would only consider a car with that sort of miles if I was going to keep it to run into the ground and then scrap it, as it will be even harder to sell the next time around.
If it's a bargain though then it might be worth a look at :)

It might need some bearings soon at that mileage?

However it shows what you can get out of a car so why do keep chjanging for cars with less mileage

Because a new car or near new car will have warranty & less to go wrong.

With new cars owned in terms of maintenance I only ever paid for servicing & consumables no repair costs whatsoever.

With mainstream cars used prices reflect condition, age & the higher the risk of component failure.

I am always cynical re seller claiming all mileage was on motorway. Highly unlikely & unless seller is 1st keeper not verifibale either.

I have a company car VW Passat TDI which does a lot of motorway miles, is is not quet 3 years old and it has done 112k already. It will have about 140k when it goes and I normally find they drive just as well on the last day I have them as the first.

My present car has just had its first set of brake pads done and it has even had so much as a buld changed.

Dont worry about the mileage as long as the car has been serviced and it drives ok.

We have some vans at work with 300k on them

Don't get me wrong 3 cars on drive at moment have 330k between them ( shared) I was simply answering the question as to why many folk wont buy high milers.

As well as fears re potential running costs there is a degree of age/mileage/market value snobbery.....Aka "Keeping up with the Jones".

Most given choice would prefer to have a newish car on drive unless particularly fond of something older.

Although I run a company car to big mieages when I was looking for my X, I wanted a low mileage one as I wanted to keep it. I got one with 59k on it whch had been a weekend car and had not done many short local trips. They used it to visit family at the weekend

The only problem with low mileages ons is getting one that has not been used just for the 2miles school run each day. It a car has done that all its life a high mileage one will be a far better car but it is getting someone to buy in to it. Cars with 200+ K are always going to be hard to seel especcially if they are not a workhorse type of car.

well in response its about 2k cheaper than one with 100k less milage, i dont go for mega low milers as you usually pay ott for them and alot of parts are worn with age as much, i would check if done/remove swirl flaps straight away, turbos are £300 ( and theres alot of scarmongering bout turbos from 80k on the x5s!! as for the new car vs old some of the newcars are depriciating at a higher rate per month than you could ever spend on parts plus the minimum 20% vat lost instantly!  i too have driven transits etc with 3-500k on which are fine and a truck with 980k, i might go view (its local) and have a mooch through the history as apparently theres a thick folder full or recipts so might well have had turbos etc, i would also be keeping it for a good few years and by then would probly be worth 2k max so milage wouldnt be so much of an issue agaist the fact it is very very high spec,  thanks for all the fast responses!

When I bought my X I was not too bothred about resale, everyone was saying get a derv as they are easy to sell and hold there value. But I wanted a V8,

So I factured in if I bought a cheaper car it can only cost me what I gave for it at worst. Which is likley to be less that I would loose on say a £40k X5 Derv.

It does make sence if you think about it, unless you really need a newish car getting an older one is a no brainer. At least I hope it is ;)

200k+ cars!!

Post by CondorX5 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 7:05 am

Bought a T4 VW Caravelle a while ago with 270+ K miles in the clock.  The 2.5TDi 102 engine.  Drives like a rocket, absolute pleasure to drive. Full history started life as an airport shuttle. There are vw owners on the T4 forum who have done 300 -500 k miles and more and still their vans go on.  Didnt pay minimal rice for the velle either, still over £4K at that mileage.  Personally i would buy a high miler of price  was right and history stacked up .

Well I think I'm going to have to go for a look if it doesn't sell by tuesday as I can't go today as planned so it will have to be tuesday, I can imagine most buyers will be put off so probly will still be for sale tue,  he says its fsh and its 1 owner so I would presume well looked after service wise, tbh my lass does about 3k per year as oppose to my 25k + so will either average out eventually or get swapped with the x5 and turned into intergalactic miles!!  Part of mes curious to buy it and see if 300k + is possible
