Wing mirror issues...

Post by Imy » Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:01 pm

So I've been in the x5 for over a week now. I enjoy the drive and the way it looks, I even found the front cup holders today (don't take the pi$$)

However I have a few issues...

The wing mirrors are crap... How do you guys actually see out of them properly?
I have a huge blind spot and I'm not quite sure how to correctly configure them.
Also I don't think the glass has the convexed view?

And another thing, my wing mirrors wobble like sh1t! Is there an easy fix to this other than stuffing duck tape as the previous owner has done?

I think that's it for now :)

Strip the mirrors mate.

There is no blind spot, unless you have non OEM mirrors on there.

If I set the mirrors to see just a little bit of the side of the car, because their is no convexed view I can't see any wider. But then if I set it to have a wider view I can't see what's coming up directly beside me...
Have I killed the explanation?
All pervious BMW's iv had have a line going down the far side of the mirrors which then bends the view should my mirrors have this line?

In reply to both your posts, sounds like you don't have OEM mirrors, mine have the line and the convex outer edge to catch that blind spot.

Strip them: get them off the car and dismantled. You'll no doubt find the previous owner smacked the mirrors and broke a couple of iron cogs on the inside. So now they wobble...

Ok looks like I got crap mirrors. Sourced some replacements, will order tomorrow. Going cheap on eBay.

Regarding the wobbles... How do I go about rectifying this?

Get the colour-coded back cover off and then see if you can see the cogs to the motor, if you have some missing, there's your problem. You can't fix a broken iron cog.

Thanks for the info!
Turned out to be useless as one of the previous owners stick the mirrors on using some kind of an adhesive, in doing so they broke the heating clips on both mirrors!

Why o why would someone do that when it's such a cheap and quick fix???

Anyways got some nice tinted convexed mirrors, motorcyclists are now safe again!

That's a pain!!  Probably got a quote from a Dealer rather than DIY and the figure was ridiculous so they went the really cheap route!  The original mirrors might have been electrochromic (dimming) and they are expensive.

Wing mirror issues...

Post by garethdeb » Thu Jul 05, 2012 2:31 pm

My drivers side wing mirror wobbles a little, more so when my towing mirror's strapped on! Having recently changed both wing mirrors on our Z3 because the ally backplates corroded to disintegration, I am reluctant to touch the X's mirror but if this is an easily rectified problem then I may give it a go.
Regards
Gareth
