What Software?

Post by Rusty » Sat Sep 24, 2011 10:10 pm

I know that many of you on here are highly competent if not experts with computers, so it is to you all and anyone who knows, which software should I be using on my windows 7 PC to copy my DVDs to iPod video format, also to store on an NAS drive to share amongst all my computers?

I hope that someone can help.

Thank you in anticipation.

I use Handbrake to convert my files to m4v for iPhone/iPad. I have iTunes installed on several machines and just tell them all to use the same location on my server to store the library.

What Software?

Post by Rusty » Mon Jul 02, 2012 6:58 pm

Thought I would resurrect this old post as I am finally going to bite the bullet and buy (please forgive me) some DVD ripping software so I can get my fils on to HDD and iTunes.

Just wondered if there were any other suggestions to the ones above.

I am looking to be as future proof as possible so any free future updates would be good

Thank you in advance

I use handbrake too, very reliable. You will also need something to help with DVD encryption. Google "anydvd" to learn more.

I use both of the above (came with the server build)......AnyDVD HD does everything including Blu-ray.  Once you buy the product (trials are available) then you get free updates every few weeks.  Handbrake is good too - especially if you want to convert to tablet devices, but watch out for CPU load.  The version I have, Handbrake CLI, will use all of the CPU's capability to do it's thing - and that's using an i7 with 8GB RAM too!

There is a GUI Version of Handbrake too, which might be easier to use than the CLI (Command Line Interface) version.  As my system came with CLI in the supplier's 'wrapper' I've not seen it run, but it's well known.

We have an i7 with 8gb, so does it cope well?

No problem at all...... :ok:

50GB Blu-ray takes about 1-2 hours to 'recode', DVD about 50 mins.  It takes a Blu-ray file size down to anywhere between 800MB and 4GB depending upon the options you chose.  Then just add the folder where you store your movies into iTunes and away you go...... :)

Add a streamer and you can feed them to your TVs too.

I haven't tried to do this for a couple of years, but I recall I kept having audio sync issues when converting to an iPhone / iPad compatible format.

Do the tools mentioned handle this okay?

AnyDVD HD for me as well. I bought the license for it, well worth it.
