"optimistic" mpg
"optimistic" mpg
Hi, i was feeling pleasantly surprised (dare i say it smug) as the obc was saying i was getting 27.1mpg, so i worked it out to see what the "true" reading was. It came out at 24.62mpg, which i accept is not too bad considering the weight and aerodynamics involved, but was wondering what other 3.0d owners were getting.
For those with a v8 feel free to post as you will make me feel better! Thats not meant as a dig though as i know that you have the soundtrack and performance on your side- as the saying goes you pays your money and takes your choice!

Re: "optimistic" mpg
I bought my v8 about a month ago, and I get 15.5 mpg. I don't drive the x5 a lot it's the wife's and she only does around town drivin. The drive and the sound makes up for the mpg.
Re: "optimistic" mpg
My computer mpg is out by about 10% on my petrol calculations and 20% on lpg. My 23.7 reading today when i filled up with lpg was calculated out at an actual 19mpg.
Bear in mind that this was on half price fuel so a petrol equivalent of around 38mpg, take that at diesel prices and probably 40mpg.
Not wanting to rub it in or anything - makes a change though from other way round

Mine is also the wife's/weekend family car as i drive a van for work and as she only really does short journeys i don't think the mpg is too bad considering and is worth it in my opinion as i like the car.
I wouldn't knock the v8s as i am well pleased with how mine goes for a heavy 4x4 so can appreciate that they must be impressive, was just trying to make my fuel costs sound better- curse you lpg boys with your best of both worlds position!

Re: "optimistic" mpg
4.8is long term combined is 19.4mpg including towing a caravan.
I re set my other mpg reading each tank full and get about 22 mpg with a fair bit of town work. On a run 28 is easy enough to get.

Re: "optimistic" mpg
I used to get around 27-28mpg average on the E53, 35-37 if driven very gently on a motorway run, usually it was about 31-33. Urban driving gave 25-27mpg. My current X6 40d turns in 31mpg mixed driving average with 40mpg on a 140mile stretch of the M4 in good weather last week, which although a 'one off' test by me was still impressive.
I only have 7,500 miles on the car now so I expect it to improve with time and use.

that sounds pretty good Richard - especially if including towing. I have been advised that towing a caravan halves your mpg!!
Have you tried actual calculation yourself though - as posted the computer tends to be optomistic. My current long term is noted at 22.4mpg, other one reset for tank fill today showing about 25.

I cross check each tank full, litres / 4.55 / mileage
When I towed with my Passat TDI it went from 55 MPG solo to 26/28MPG towing
The 4.8 does 22ish solo and 17 to 19 towing. But to be honest even with a 1650KG caravan on the back it just does not really work very hard.

Re: "optimistic" mpg
After 3 months use my 4.4 is showing 19.0mpg with a mix of careful wifey driving and a little of me in Sport manual mode - the accurate measurement is 18.7mpg so pretty accurate.

Re: "optimistic" mpg
I've had my 3.0d for a month and put 2500 ish miles on it. Avg is 31.3, so not too bad. On an m'way run at 80 on cruise it was 35. Drop that to 75 and it's 37, pleased with that.
Re: "optimistic" mpg
3.0d my no1 average is 27.9mpg and no2 average has been around 30-31mpg max and thats careful driving at 75 on dual carriageway to work every day. Strange how theres such a difference.

I felt the same, until i drove one. Gutless is all i can describe it as, made up my mind pretty quickly.
Id rather spend an extra £15 a week on fuel.

Interesting considering the later 3.0d matches the 4.8 V8 for torque......hardly gutless unless it was faulty?
