Independent tailgate opening
Has anyone managed to set the remote control on the Beemer so that they can open the tailgate without first having to unlock the car? The Manual mutters vaguely about some countries requiring this functionality, but my E46 used to open the top part of the tailgate without first unlocking the car.
I have not found a way to do this with the display in the car, but before I approach BMW and pay for the privilege of fiddling with my remote control, I'd like to know if there is any possibility.
Chris

That's how it's always worked on my 2010 35d. Press and hold the remote button nearest the key ring attachment and the boot upper portion opens. Shame it can't be made to close using the lock button on this side of the Atlantic...
(though I understand from Xoutpost that some have started finding how to code their cars independent of dealers)

My E53 4.8 also does this off the remote. Tbh I thought it was factory.
Re: Independent tailgate opening
That was the way it worked on my E53 too, but my MY2011 X6 has to have at least one door unlocked before the tailgate will release.
You also can't close the powered tailgate off the key by default - the function exists but needs enabling deep in the car code.
Probably another 'safety measure' >:(

Independent tailgate opening
Having been on the wrong side of the "wife has locked keys in boot 100 miles from home" saga, perhaps the one unlocked door idea is actually a good idea!

Only it was me, and the spare keys were only 10 miles away. A bit embarrassing as you might imagine. :-[ :-[ )

Independent tailgate opening
Apparently there is a way to get them open, but since I was unknown over on outpost, no one would pm me the info whilst I was stuck..... Unless of course it's just one of those urban myth things!
Of course, if any of you trusting lot do know this trick on the E53, feel free to pm me for future reference.
You can trust me, I'm only half Greek.

Thanks for the ideas. I suspect that my X1 can be made to open the tailgate irrespective of the locked/unlocked state of the doors, but it will need special coding. At present it will not allow the tailgate to open unless a door is unlocked.
And I've just adjusted my forum settings so that I know if someone has answered a post of mine -- that's why it has taken me so long to respond to these responses . . .
