Tethering

Post by Rusty » Thu Jun 21, 2012 8:36 am

Quick question for those in the know, can you tether an iphone 3 to an ipad?
If not, can you suggest phones that you can tether?
Thanks all

Thank you squeaky, that is good enough for me. Swimbo's friend just dumped her nokia in the loo and after seeing me tether from my samsung wanted to know if the 3 could do the same until she upgrades in a couple of months.

How do you know if your provider allows this? I have an unlimited data package with my iPhone 4 with T-Mobile and it would be quite nice if I could use it.

Tethering

Yes you can tether iphone to ipad- CPW were quite specific it was ok when I collected my iphone from them. Its quite easy to do. Tmobile AFAIK you can tether as well - used to do that years ago with mobile and laptop to get internet on the go before dongles were easily available, TMobile were one of the first networks you could use in this way and even now, their  data plan payg sims will work in an ipad or a phone.

Was that a iphone 3 or 4?
Apple link from squeaky showed that the 3 could use bluetooth to share but not wifi, but you can with a 4

Orange want £10 a month for the privilege even though I have a data package which I rarely use (and will be renegotiating when the contract runs out in a few days time) on my iPhone4 >:(

I don't understand the contract thing you are referring to?
On my phone I just select tethering and it creates a local WiFi hotspot which I can connect up to 3 devices. This just uses my data connection to connect to the net.
I just wanted to know if apple products could do the same?

On Orange, if you press that it tells me Ican't without paying.  If you have a 750MB/month contract then it is included.  When I first had the contract the allowance was that much, but Orange revised everything downwards and now want £10/month!  Apparently they can legally vary the terms of parts of the contract, including the data allowances (and monthly charge - which has gone up this year.. >:( ).

Not all networks charge and I am looking around so see what is available from the competition these days.

I see.  I too am on orange with the standard 500mb data and I have no problems. Strange.

Tethering is included FOC on my monthly O2 plan - £15 per month for 600 minutes, loads of text's and 1gb of data

Once activated a tethering option is available in general settings, and although I use a 4S I see no reason why it won't work.

I tether my iPad to it frequently without any issues.

Just been discussing this on another well known car forum, question I've just asked is, when you select wifi on the iPhone you get the wifi symbol in the top left hand corner, but when you select wifi hotspot so as to tether to your device this goes and you get a different symbol, is this purely because you go onto either 2 or 3G.

I suppose it's simply to make you aware you are tethering, rather than using wifi?

Just started looking at new contracts and Orange tell me that they have rrecently revised their options and that new contracts get tethering free as long as it's the 500MB deal regardless of contract length, but not on PAYG.  I'm looking at a £20pcm deal with one month duration so can cancel at 30-days notice.

There are cheaper 12/18/24 month deals, but they all come with penalty clauses.  When I say cheaper, I mean you get more time per month, but I have never used anything close to the 600mins allowance, so it's not important.
