Help on rear light failure

Post by X5DOB » Sat Jun 09, 2012 11:14 pm

I know this has been mentioned before, but my rear inner light has filled up with moisture and has now failed! Do I have to replace the whole unit, or can you just replace bulbs then re-seal it??? Car not under warranty anymore!

Cheers.

Help on rear light failure

Post by stevox5 » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:42 am

If its an E70 ie 2007 onwards you will probably find the internals of the unit are  Badly corroded , if it's just damp try drying it and cleaning with electrical contact cleaner first before replacing.
There is a modified rubber seal now available to fit instead of the sealing tape it originally had. I would fit the modified seals to both lamps if I were you.

Yeah its a E70. No it is 1/4 inch full of water so yeah I think its a full replace job.

I have found a replacement light but it comes without a new seal, does anyone know where I can buy these??

Cheers

I know someone who works for a BMW main dealer and spoke to him about this problem and he said that he's never heard of a foam replacement, they just stick them on again using that butyl crap?!?

Has anyone brought these foam seals separately and where from please?

Is it item 9 on this diagram on Realoem by any chance?  It doesn't say what it's made of though.

Same part number is used right through to April 2010 when the LCI came out.

There is however this version used on the LCI, which looks like a different material and if the same shape might be what's being referred to?

Help on rear light failure

The tape he is on about is what is fitted originally and why they leak!

I would either speak directly to the parts department or try a dealer that knows what they are talking about.

I could get you the part numbers Monday when back in work if need be.
