Hmm. Personally I'd keep her and get her sorted. Only reason I say this is that you have stated you love everything about the X but it's just this one issue. I know exactly how you feel as to rectify the same I changed pretty much everything on the suspension side apart from the actual airbags (and it came to quite a bill I can tell you). It took a few months of back and forwards to Sytner Sutton Coldfield but finally got there in the end. Since then it's been good to me apart from a few normal wear and tear items but at the mileage I got to expect it.

Also factor in what you will lose for only a few months ownership on top of any other costs.

Then there is the 535d you're considering. If looking at an 05/55 it's an earlier one of the bunch and still do suffer with their own issues. My old 530d (same core engine really) had issues when mileage reached higher figures. I had turbo failure, injectors, etc. You could buy a brand new car and still have issues.

It's your call at the end if the day but think of all the factors first and then make the decision. If its still to sell, then cool and look forward to the pics of the new motor (oh and first dibs on the mods....lol).

Might give in and sell the X5

Post by X5Driver » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:00 am

Thanks everyone for your input

Raj I have replaced everything I can think of that's the problem. If I knew it would cost this much and be sorted that's one thing but I don't know where to go next. The Indy I use is good but he's stumped too

Might give in and sell the X5

I'm inclined to agree with the masses, and stick with the X.

After having changed all the bits you have, and with all that money invested, you would prob be losing more than you think by trading for a 535.

Having driven a few 5 series before selecting my X, I'm sure you most definitely wouldn't be disappointed with a 535's performance. I was looking at the saloon as SWMBO doesn't like the touring (don't ask :{ ) and there just wasn't enough room in the back for 3 kids comfortably, especially behind be as I'm 6' 2". I absolutely loved the drive, it was very, how shall we say, enthusiastic.  I made the sales guy turn a funny colour :)

If I were to 'downsize' I would go for the 535, but in your position, I would give it one last go first, or you might regret it.

As Sanj suggested, give Jason a shout, you have nothing to lose

I understand fully. Locating my X's suspension issues started to really peev me as it took some time and a lot of replacement components. Do me a favour Sacha, give me a call when you can.

Re: Might give in and sell the X5

Ok guys an update on to the whole reason for this post.  The self level error came up on my X 3 days after I bought it and I immediately contcated the dealer regarding the warranty and I was messed around for 4 weeeks until he finally confessed it didnt cover suspension, infact when I got the policy it has a max claim of £500 which as we all know on the X is a tyre valve cover!

So I gave him the benefit of the doubt and tried all the stuff I listed in the post reassured by the seller that WE would get it sorted and he would reimburse me.  Then he decided WE should go halves on things to which I decided wasnt fair as it happened 3 days after I bought it.  ALso it had a front air strut replaced the month before I bought it so I suspect he reset the fault and sold it on as he was using it for 6 months.

Anyway 3 weeks ago the dealer said he would send a truck down and refund me my money + £500 as I had a tracker fitted and spent on a few bits.  I declined as I really love the thing.  Hence the post getting all your opinions. So today I called him up and said enough is enough I want him to pick it up (I did say before to my misses I felt the refund was a wide boy talking and an empty gesture as he knew I wouldnt accept) anyway today apparently he said that was 3 weeks ago and now its worth £4000 less that was his offer so I said he was taking the piss, to this he replied that if I used abusive language he would terminate the call.  Bear in mind that he was joking about my misses fancying him a while ago on the phone..... oh how the tides change when he thinks he will loose a few quid anyway I said fair enough stop extracting the urine from me and sort this out to which he said nothing I can do so there we have it  I have been had or so he thinks as I expect he thinks I am some cornish oik who sleeps with his mother (I dont by the way shes nothing special :)) )

So I have called my credit card company which I paid £1000 deposit with and opened a dispute and I will be contacting trading standards tomorrow as I have tried for 3 months to sort this and spent over £1000 which I will be claiming back and also getting a quote to replace all the remaining suspension components and claim travelling expenses and also be getting a valuation from BMW dealer on the X with the error and without the error as resale is affected.

Also I will get my indy who had to replace the rear arm as the bush was in pieces to do a report as there is small play in the front arm too.

Trust me my friends this guy is gonna catch it now  >:D

Thanks for all your support and help on this, the unfortunate outcome is my ove for the X is tainted but I am sure after a drive it will be love again
