New X3

Post by lubetech » Fri Jun 01, 2012 1:04 pm

Hi all recently took ownership of my first BM, 2.0 X3 sport diesel, love it so far is there anything i should look out for its a 54 plate with 70k on the clock.
The previous owner has worn out some of the paint at the centre part of the steering wheel can this be replaced ? apart from that all good.

Cheers
Tony

Hello and welcome to the forum.....

I think the steering wheel can be resprayed. If memory serves BMW use some sort of rubber paint to bond to the plastic, but it can be redone using any of the appropriate plastic paints. I think some have done it here. It's a very common problem across a number of BMWs from 2004 onwards. Had the same on my E53 X5.

In terms of issues we don't yet have many X3 Owners here but no doubt one of them will come along, and there will be some similarities with the E53 too......

.......and don't forget a couple of pics of your new toy (assuming you're happy to show).... :poke: :D

If the car has a warranty BMW 'may' change FOC.

They did on my old 4.8iS, equally I've heard stories of owners being told to f-off!

I guess any matt black rubberised paint will do the job.

Be sure to take the wheel apart, remove all existing paint and spray away

Welcome and whatever the cost of paint/effort, do ask Parts Dept how much for a new piece. Bought mine for sub £30.

Mogs, going back a bit but think you had a grey 'is' right?

Yup, first was a carbon Black 3.0D M Sport and then onto a Sterling Grey 4.8iS

You've got a good memory!

Think it was the fact they were so rare when you had yours, none had that colour (that I had seen). 3 years later and I finally caught up!

It was gorgeous.

Welcome aboard. Look forward to the pics as not many on here.

You can either paint it (I know others have) or as Sanj has suggested, buy a new one as they aren't as expensive as you think.
