Warranty?

Post by finnie » Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:56 am

Hi again Guys

This is an older car than I am used to so am obviously a bit aprehensive of high bills, especially considering the mileage of the car. I am thinking about getting a third party warranty such as from Warranty Direct. They are quoting about £500 a year, is this worth it and are they good at paying out should there be a problem?

Hi Finnie,

I haven't seen what car you have or age / mileage etc so not sure if this is expensive or not. What service history do you have with the vehicle? How long are you planning on keeping it and what sort of annual mileage do you cover?

Its a 20043.0d sport with 80k on it, I will probably only do about 8k a year on it. It does have full service history on it.

Hang fire a short while and you'll get the same warranty for less money (maybe even £386) from warranty direct, they'll ring or contact you via email ;) I've heard that this policy includes wear and tear after 90 days which is useful - warranties that only cover sudden failure aren't really worth anything TBH.

Yeah hold fire for a little while and see if you can get a better deal. The last thing you want is to pay top whack for a warranty that doesn't hold water when it comes to a claim. Make sure you have a low excess too if possible.

Well what can i say but thanks very much gents. The forum has paid off handsomely, Warranty Direct just called - £390 Brilliant. Who would have thought that the internet price would have been beaten by so much in just a day. And yes it includes wear and tear parts. Give it a couple of months and that will be my wobbly bushes sorted!

WOO HOO

Thanks X drivers!!!

Did you get the franchise dealer option with the £25 excess? That is what I have (until the 20th of this month ...).

Point to note is that they do not pay for diagnose, nor dismantling of other parts to get to the parts that need to be replaced. Also, for every 10k over 60k (starting at 10% at 60k), your own contribution is another 10% (at 80k, that means you pay 30% yourself I think of the parts only).

I am considering the Warranty direct policy (or indeed nay others if the forumites give good recommendations) - I noticed from a previous posting they they cover 'wear and tear' - is this really the case and does it cover all items for the life of the car?

Seems to me that for a few hundred quid a year they would lose out big time on wear and tear claims ?

It is supposedly one of the better ones, although I was fed up with the rip off when I cancelled it after three months (bought a BMW AUC and part exed my first X)...I paid around £400 for the Luxury Policy, only had three months use of it (no claims ever) and when I cancelled I only got £130 back. Bunch of sharp schemers, really.......

Hi,
I have a Luxury Care policy with WD
Recently had £ 1500 worth of work carried out ( CV Boots, PAS pipe & auxilary heater ) they gave authorization for nearly £1000 of work no problem & am also hoping they will cover first invoice for over £500.
They initially said no to this as I didn't get authorization but had contacted them via website & got no reply & needed my car back. Will let you know how it goes but really glad I took out the policy :)

Hi, I think I paid £ 400 last December but got 15 months cover. As you've found if you ask for price on line & then wait they usually contact you with a better offer. My X5 is a Dec 05 Diesel & had 29k on clock then, just under 40k now.

Hi I am very interetsed in this policy but looking advice. I filled out the online form for warranty direct a few days ago (2001 X5 3.0d 89K) they quoted me £453. They phoned me yesterday and requoted me £450. I have a few problems with my X5 such as 2 faulty injectors, pixel display fault and hand brake mech.

would warrant direct cover any off these problems???????????????

I know there is a £50 excess fee, just trying to work out if this is a cheaper option to fix the problems.

They told me I need a recent VAT registered receipt for a service. I got my X5 serviced 2 weeks ago but didnt get a receipt (book was stamped tho) I have £250 of receipts for parts only. Does this mean I need to service again????? I am not interested in doing this as its a waste of money

thanks

+1 for WD with luxury cover. When my gearbox broke they paid for everything other than the BMW diagnosis -30 mins labour - and £50 of the gearbox rebuild. Total bill to them was summat over £3k. I also opted for Franchised Dealer cover. Got discounts as I'm a member of the BMW GB Car Club and Civil Service Motoring Assoc.

I didn't get asked for a copy of the service receipt which was done about four months before I took out the policy as they accepted the dates stamped in the book. Mine was still under a 60,000 mile / 5 year BMW service package at the time so I had no receipts. They did want to see a copy of the MoT cert though.
