It might be the same route there and back but were all other factors identical? Ambient temperature, humidity, windspeed/direction? And most importantly, was it a dead flat there and back? If you spent more time climbing altitude on the way back than there.......

i would say wind direction and speed is a big factor.
75mph with a 10 mph tailwind = 65mph effective drag speed.
75mph with 10mph headwind = 85mph drag speed. quite a difference to a chunky car like the x.

I know when I was driving between home and Manchester (170 miles) I used to get better mpg coming South than travelling North. I always used the same route and the only thing I could put it down to was here in the East I'm pretty close to seal level and Manchester is higher so I was averaging more 'uphill' outbound and more 'downhill' returning. I used to see about 31-33mpg one way and 35-37mpg the other.

it COULD be the ambient conditions, but the weather didn`t really change.

It wasn`t dead flat, blimey, you`d do well to find a 220+mile drive without hills !

I`ve found that over a journey of 3 hours, the MPG is a pretty decent average, it tends to balance out the hills.

I know the X5 isn`t the most aerodynamic car in the world, BUT, until the last 5 months or so, I was averaging withing 2mpg per tank (on similar journey). I never had figures as low as I`m getting now. :(
