Tyre Valves - where to buy?

Post by dark_stranger » Mon May 21, 2012 3:12 pm

I need to replace my tyre values and BMW have quoted £15 per tyre for rubber values and awaiting a price for the chrome values. Does anyone know where I can buy the metal value, hopefully cheaper than via BMW?

I would prefer to replace, like for like, so what the chrome.

I take it you mean tyre valves? I don't think the BMW ones are anything special so you should be able to get them from any decent tyre place. If it's just the valve caps, even Halfrauds sell them. Or you could try the usual eBay look see.. :)

The valves are cheap, the cost comes with removing the tyres to replace the valves, then fitting and balancing after. Why do they need replacing? Are they damaged or leaking? If they are leaking from the core then just replace the core so you can keep your metal valves. If they do need replacing try some Motorsport spares shops such as Merlin.

Tyre Values - where to buy?

The tyres have pressure sensors as due to having 1 tyre larger (spare) than the other 3, the warning messages keep going off. What do i need to buy? Can you buy just the metal bit visible outside of the wheel?

You can have the valves replaced at any tyre fitters, worth having a ring round for prices. As for what you want to replace them with, it's upto you. Standard rubber valves, rubber valves with chrome sleeves, metal screw in valves or screw in flush valves that you use an adaptor to check/pump up your tyres. What ever you use the tyres will have to come off regardless.
I've had a car with metal valves and not had any issues with them. I've also had a car with the chrome covers.......they got nicked. Have a google and see what you like.

To save any messing about I have booked the car into BMW. They advise that due to having the pressue sensors, its best to go for the metal valves (true or not?) but, its what I wanted. They have priced it at £116 to replace all 4. Removing tyres, fitting valves, refitting tyres & balancing.

Tyre Valves - where to buy?

£29 a wheel!!! Or £23.20 if spare is included. Seems expensive to me. I'd just get the dodgy one replaced, who really looks at tyre valves anyway, apart from thiefs that pinch your nice valve caps.

All 4 values are in pretty bad condition and therefore makes sense to get them all done at the same time.
