Lastly for tonight anyway, had to pop out this evening, it was funny it's like the fly being attracted to the light, now I can see them I keep following the light edges which is kind of scary if you keep doing that on corners, I can't help it, lighttttt...
Just wait til you have adaptives......then you start watching them waggle too..

I read those pattern links, all I have to say is you whattt
You would imagine that the light pattern from one side to the other would be like a straight edge horizon line.

On the E36 lights each bulb light pattern effectively had a flick up to the left. This meant that head on they didn't blind but the light esacaping over to the curb could be allowed to go a tad higher or further.

If you shone each lamp at a wall it was quite obvious. Another way of describing it would be the light filled an area from 3 oclock to 10 oclock on a clock face

Bulbs with a flat top cut off pattern would fill an area from 3 oclock to 9 oclock
I think yours show a (3 oclock to 10 oclock) kick up to the left and on the whole the right one looks lower than the left IMO

Image

Look for this pattern ,,,,,,,but the other way round
http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/00/51/19

Found an old image....may or may not be like this...not sure if the 53 is like this
Image

They may even be like the top one of these (the one marked dot pattern)...but the other way round...still a bit low on the right

HID help?

Post by jeegnesh » Thu May 17, 2012 9:48 pm

So for now we lowered the driver lamp to avoid blinding oncoming drivers till I get down to the MOT centre to get them aligned correctly, hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks for the explanation makes it a bit clearer didn't realise this stuff was so precise.

This is the point....I'm not sure what the exact pattern is meant to be but if you study your picture the right one does look lower (or the left higher)

being anal with the e36
I tape measured the headlight centre line
stuck tape a few inches below on the fence
marked a center point
measured each way half an half the distance between the lenses on the tape
These points are where the KICK should be
backed the car away
made an attempt to center the car with string down each side
had a look with both on
obscured one and adjusted the other, then reversed

the tape is still there :D :D

Back on topic (for a moment) my E53 with OEM HID had the British/American Beam pattern - similar to the DOT standard.

The beam settings are in Section 1.8 Page 5 of the 2012 MOT Manual (in HTML & Zipped pdf Form) available free from VOSA.

My X6 has the same, as does our Mini.
