screeching sound from engine

Post by Fluk&law » Thu May 17, 2012 5:05 pm

Hello.

For the last month or so i can hear a screeching sound when driving along. This happens all the time when driving, a sort of a supercharger sound. The sounds seem to come from the front pulley area although i'm not exactly sure.

Upon searching the web the common theme seems to be idler pulleys, is there a way of checking this without taking off the belts. It's a 2004 4.4 with the n62 engine i believe and if it's not the pulleys then what else could it be.

Thanks.

Had the same on my 4.8 and it was the belt tensioner, if it wasnt that alternator bearings were most likely.

Think you can get new bearings fitted at certain places as alternators can be scary money.

Mine had belts removed and hand spinning the tensioner you could hear and feel it.

Yes it is really, I think if you could get under it on a ramp one of those stethoscope things against the alternator would eliminate that but you wouldnt want to get this near the pulley and not the sort of thing you can do on the ground with belts whipping around.

Think it was called a deflection pulley and cost about £25+VAT + Labour and wasnt a long job so I thought was worth a try as thats only about 20 miles of petrol in this thing anyway (note that is a joke before all the help full comments about fuel economy being below norm)

Thinking about it I thing its one of those 1/2" square drive tensioners where you just take the pressure of the spring with a ratchet/breaker bar and slip the belt off.... or that could be just the Discovery

To remove belts it's just the 1/2 inch drive ratchet into the tensioner then a few 8 or 10 mm bolts for tensioner. All from memory so may be slightly off
