GAP insurance, experiences with

Post by 535dboy » Mon May 14, 2012 7:05 pm

I have always tended to do GAP insurance on the new cars and the difference between dealer prices and 3rd parties seems to be bigger than you would think

Porsche £899 (discounted!)
ALA £240 on £62k car with £25k cover (ie GAP/top up)

Anybody have any helpful experience?

Cheers

Never had to make a claim so cant really comment on the service, I went down the root of ALA, this time, not really sure if it was the right thing but going on the cost differance of something i've never used it sort of made sence to keep the extra money in my pocket.

I went with direct gap.co.uk, seemed to be the best value for 5 years.

Paid £195 for £25k.

Just came across this forum whilst looking up info on the X5 for a relative. As I'm just about to buy Gap Insurance myself (allbeit for a much cheaper vehicle) I thought I'd chip in.

I've decided to go with GapInsurance.co.uk for my policy.

I have just checked them out based on your £62k vehicle price and for 3 years they come out at £237.50 for £25k, £285 for £50k, or £342 for the 'Unlimited Claim Limit" option (they set the claim limit to be the full £62k).

Enjoy your new car!

Thanks for that, I will have a look there then because the max I have seen with this one is £25k so it would be handy to increase that as the car gets older.

You expect a depreciation of more than 25k in 3 years then?

At a guess it will lose all of that, especially if insurers are involved.. :x

I'm not familiar with model-specific depreciation, but with my cars I've always worked on an assumption of up to 70% depreciation over 3 years and I've not really been too far wrong.

From a starting point of £62k, that be a massive £43,400 lost to depreciation.

However the most expensive car I've ever bought was probably more like £22k so it may be a whole different ball-game on your financial playing field :-)

Stop depressing us.... :D

But seriously, 50% - 60% is about right for most cars of the cars on this forum these days...although there are some real shockers for depreciation in the market generally.. :(

Part of the problem on this one is the cost of the options

Base price £45k
Options £17k

We all know that the options will loose a big chunk of money and hit residuals so assume yes it is only worth £25k in its third year which would mean I would be short.
