Mpg drop after service

Post by Bolio » Sat May 12, 2012 8:20 am

Hi all, my x6 was oil serviced and had a vehicle inspection a couple of weeks ago and since then it seems to have dropped a couple of mpg on the computer. It only does about 5 miles a day as the missus uses it for work, I have used it to do a couple of 50 mile round trips on the motorway in this time as well. Do you think with it only doing short trips when it was in the dealers and they plug the computer in it may be trying to do a dpf regen? If so how long does it have to be running for to do this? I am driving down to Tuscany on the 26th May :driving: so I guess it will complete a regen then. It seems to be running fine I am just wondering why the mpg drop.

Thanks Bolio

Odd one... :scratchhead:

5 miles a day would not be enough to allow a DPF regen. When mine has done it the car's fans can run on for 10-15 mins after the switch off. A run down to Tuscany will definitely clean it out though.

It might have had new software put in as part of the service, but nothing obvious I can think of for causing the mpg to fall unless the new air filter (was one fitted?) isn't as 'free flowing' as the previous one, or a hose isn't on properly. :scratchhead:

Are your tyre pressures OK? Too low a pressure could do it perhaps.. :?

Must admit I thought maybe it's had software update, it's not had a new air filter yet so will probably still have the same one in from new, I know on my previous bmws they did not have one till 60k service. It's a fair way off that only on 33k. I will check the tyre pressure's and have a look to see if anything is a miss under the bonnet.
Thanks

My dealer told me that they would apply any software updates at time of servicing. I don't know how you tell though. It will be buried in the idrive somewhere no doubt - though what the numbers mean is anyone's guess.. :?

Just a quick post to say all has seemed to return back to normal now mpg wise. I can only put it down to things setteling back to normal after whatever they did on the service which I think must have included a software update of some kind. Either that or it's just getting over the shock of being redlined to the chippy and back from one of the tech's on their dinner hour!

Another good thing about the intravee. Logs the last 10 journeys ( speed rpm engine temp and g force etc) I think. Logs dates and times so have proof and ammunition to go nuts

I doubt low mpg when returned from dealers is down to them ragging it on a short test drive - will be down to the fact that is left running while checking over during service. Could be ticking over for half an hour or so using fuel but doing no miles - a sure way to drop the mpg calc.
