Re: M Sport paint chipping: Is it a 20in wheel issue ??
I haven't seen any sign of damage on my E71. Is this an E70 only problem, or is it only being reported at present on the E70? The E71 has flared arches which may mitigate this, but I thought I'd ask in case anyone knows of it on the X6 too?
I know we don't get the wheel issue as those wheels aren't available OEM (yet). No doubt new M50d owners might suffer it though..

Quick update, got the car back on Friday with the right protection on, however, got a call from the body shop manager on the way to collect it saying white speckles had come up on each panel. They are checking into why it's happened but needs reapplying
Re: M Sport paint chipping: Is it a 20in wheel issue ??
Wax contamination? Perhaps they didn't clean it off properly before applying - wouldn't be the first time anyone has 'cut corners'!
Very annoying, but at least they are still going to deal with it..

Re: M Sport paint chipping: Is it a 20in wheel issue ??
get mine back this week will let you know how I get on only thing I know at present is that they removed the sills and rear arches and resprayed them,I wiped both rear doors myself with IPA before I took it in and told the bodyshop not to respray the rear doors as they laquer the whole door,One question you should ask the dealer is why the spots have appeared if they resprayed the areas, paint reacts to wax.

Marks on the film: There are several causes for this first straight tramelines are a film defect and are easily spotted, small scratches on the surface (usually slightly curved) tend to be squeegee marks due to dirt (or hardwater particles) a small number of these would not be cause for a rejection of the job, however lots of them will affect the clarity of the film and may be cause for rejection these are avoided by keeping the squeegee wet. These can usually be removed by gentle use of Meguiars Scratch X. Scarring, these are caused by the squeegee, there will sometimes be one or two of these on jobs they will only be visible from a couple of inches and should not be cause for rejection however if there are lots of them or they are visible from a couple of feet away, again I would reject the job
Water Bubbles: The film process is like window tinting and moisture under the film can take up to a month (depending on humidity)This will show itself as water bubbles or on black cars as a rash of white spots these will dissapear, if a water bubble is still there after a month or so the installer should replace the film or where practicable undertake remedial work with a syringe.
Stretch marks: These show up as vertical rows of miniscule white dots or as feather edges they can appear up to two weeks later, this is due to over stretching the film or working at very low temperatures or on a cold car this is typically seen when some one insists on a home fitting in the winter. Or due to poor install either way the job should be rejected as they will not go away.
Yellowing: modern films should not yellow and should be warranted against this, however on a white car the film can look slightly creamy this is due to the adhesive (but as almost no-one has a white car now its almost a non-issue). The 3rd generation films From 3M have now pretty much eliminated this so it looks as good on a white car as any other now.

M Sport paint chipping: Is it a 20in wheel issue ??
Mine sounds most like water bubbles. Dealer thinks its the solvent in the paint that was coming through as it had so recently been sprayed. Booked in again for next week.
If it doesnt work, I'll ask for a replacement X5 50dM

All,
First post here, put deposit down on 2009 35d MSport today. Whilst at the dealer (Douglas Park, Glasgow) I was told that this is definitely a warranty issue and anyone with this problem should get it repaired and the clear films applied no questions asked and all under warranty. Needless to say I checked and it has indeed be done on my X5.

I noticed the X5 we tested had film and I thought that was because of a chipping issue - I assume the new one will have film?
I guess it's standard out of the factory now.

M Sport paint chipping: Is it a 20in wheel issue ??
Turns out that there are two versions of the clear film protection. The first turned out to not be as effective as planned so BMW then brought out a revised version which includes more extensive film around the rear wheel arches and door....

Just had a look at ours and the film not only covers the door, but the wheel arch extension as well.
Looks much the same as the film on my 997 which is there for exactly the same reason.

Re: M Sport paint chipping: Is it a 20in wheel issue ??
How on earth do manufacturers do their testing if they manage to miss this sort of thing? It can't just be because our roads are in such a poor state, or is it that the mules are not run with the 'right wheels'. To have to retrofit a plastic film onto a car really does call for some serious questions about the design and suitability for real world use. Especially as BMW knew they had a problem very quickly but played dumb for a while - or even blamed the Owners which is worse!
