Now the legalities are over :-) Spoke to hids-direct, there 2 35w kits under X5 the more expensive one is suppose to have better ballasts, I asked for a 50w kit and he pointed me too:

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/canbus-pro ... n-55w-kit/

Think I will get the 5000k and just to confirm the main bit its the H7 metal base I need?

Anyone know off hand where to get the indicator bulbs with the silver coating so you don't have the orange glow behind the cover?

Figure I been blinded by Audi's enough, time to pay them back, might even fit an Audi oncoming proximity sensor so the lights turn to point to there windscreen.

I take it our main lamp is the H7 is this kit compatable because it says Single Beam? http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-50w-sin ... -hid-kits/ or do I need to go for a Dipped Beam?

Those are what you want if you want your normal (dipped beams) to be HID....I fitted them to my facelift

You have 4 lights (on the E53 at least) :D 2 point down...2 point straight...they all have single beams...the 2 that point down are H7

I knew they had to be cheaper for a reason :-) so I guess it has to be the more expensive ones?

The 50w says it's single beam whatever that means.

See if this helps....

Dual beam kits only apply to bulb types 9007, 9004, H13, and H4. These bulb types contain both Hi and Low beams built into a single bulb. By purchasing a dual beam kit, you will maintain your Hi/Low beam functions. If you purchase a single beam kit with one of these bulb types, you will lose your Hi beam function.

As an example an H4 bulb is twin filament whereas the E53 uses two 'single-beam' bulbs (one in each light unit so a total of 4) in pairs each side of the car. The outer one is the low beam and remains on all the time the headlights are on, the inner bulb only lights when the main beam is active.

You need single beam bulbs as you don't have any of the filament types mentioned above.

As an aside.....The X6 however has what appears to be 4 projector type lamp units, but the inner pair are for looks only and to house the angel eye bulb. The X6 lamps are 'bi-xenon' in that a mechanical shutter is moved over part of the bulb on low beam so restricting the beam pattern. Select High Beam and the shutter is moved out of position and the full glory of the bulb is available. Personally I'd rather have the inner pair as real lamps. The X6 suffers poorer lighting that the E53, and as far as I know the E70 is fully bulbed up and all the lights work. The only way I know of to fix the X6 lighting is to retrofit the LCI lights which will be seriously expensive!

Does that help?

ahhh.....see what X5Sport wrote above 8-) The E53 (well my facelft) is a single beam (filament) wagon, one per headlamp

so the kits you linked above seem both to be suitable despite the curve ball throwing of one description. One is 50w...one is 55 watt. Other than making sure you get the right bulb type (H7 I think) and the temp (I went for 4,300 but som,e choose 6,000) then I cant see the difference betwen the kits?

Spoke to them direct and http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-50w-sin ... -hid-kits/ will work and they added 5000k option for me. The 55w ones were the ones they recommended to me said they are better quality and don't error on the newer X5's where as these 50's can give trouble due to the better canbus on the 55's. So I told I don't care about the new X5 as I don't have one, and the 50's come with a 2 year warranty, at which point he agreed and said the 50's will be fine and if they are not we would replace them.

Order in, better call up my YTS trainee, tell him he got some work on.
