I'd buy just the WIFI version and use a personal wifi hotspot on the iPhone. Think its only an extra £5 on your phone contract so miles cheaper than cost of iPad 3G contract etc.
Plus if you are with BT you get access to the WIFI spots for free and they are pretty much everywhere now.

Depends what you're into.....
There are too many good ones to mention....and some awful drivel too..
Check out the reviews carefully before you buy any - and try the free versions if you aren't sure. Beware that a large number of 'free apps' are actually paid for by intrusive advertising, although not all by any means.
Quite a fun one is 'PlaneFinder HD' which tells you what is buzzing over your head. If you have a media server and want to watch movies via WiFi then 'Air Video' is useful. There are currency converters, Angry Birds (never gotbthatbone but tother half has it), simulators, sat nav, photo editors, film editors, chat tools, Skype, the list goes on and on....

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Got mine from states in the end. 64GB Wifi Complete with a small stand and Keyboard for when I want to do some serious typing.
One app I really like to watch films (xvid or avi formats) on the go is CineXPlayer. Just great... no need to convert to Apple format.
Kindle so I do not need to use my kindle at least indoors, Art Set is a great app if you like drawing.
City Commute is a lot more bearable now
