What's it worth?

I spotted this lovely 2006 4.8 17k miles at highgate bmw. It looks immaculate but I was wondering, just for fun, what does the collective wisdom think would be a fair price for it? 22k seems lunacy to me, given that i've seen similar at mid 40s miles for nigh on 10 grand less. So, what do we think? somewhere between 15-17k? or is that very unfair?

I'd go for your £15-17k figures too. No way I would pay that kind of money for it at that age, regardless of the mileage being very low - which might in itself be an issue down to low usage. It's not even as if it's fully laden either. Definitely not worth £22k

Mind you, it would be a good buy for someone (at a more realistic price!). It's not even run in yet..

A few thoughts from me -
1. I'd be having a very serious look at the history/condition/tyres (rears look new?) to verify that mileage.
2. I had a look at at a car at this garage before I bought mine and it was pretty clear that they "price-up" London style on the basis that negotiations only go one way so wouldn't be afraid of being aggressive. They like to pervade a "premium feel" and price accordingly.
3. The car I looked at was a finance repossession and had no history with it (I saw it just as it came in) - to which the answer was - "no problem we 'll get a book stamped up". Still not quite sure how that works!!
4. They have a good body shop so, depending on your viewpoint, the cars look good or can hide previous dings.
5. Having said that I bought my Z1 from them 20 years ago and very happy and others on here have bought successfully from them.
6. My advice would be ignore the smoked glass and nespresso machines and go in as if you buying the car from Arthur Daley.
7. Glass's guide has a good online valuation tool for under a fiver - useful to get the trade view on pricing.

I would say knowhere near that figure I've seen 05 4.8s as low as 10k granted all higher milage but low milage isn't everything as agelack of use can cause just as many parts to fail, and you would have 12k in the parts budget to play with!!

I think nice car but over priced but being BMW they will ask that and does look mint.

In real world prob £18k is nearer as even though 17.5 k miles may need tyres as prob cracked being 6 yrs old and not always good to have a car sitting around

Agree about very little use causing problems, I would got for a car that has done at least 5k a year

I would not touch anything that has been a Cat D with a bargepole
That 4.8is is overpriced but being in mint condition it will eventually sell for around that price I would think
Its not until you are actually looking to buy a car that you realise how much abused rubbish there is about for sale and for some reason X5's seem to be worse than other cars.
Most people on this forum love their cars and will look after them, and assume others feel the same, but actually look around at what a 15k budget buys you and most of them are well past their sale by date.
I was looking for my car for months this time last year and wanted to spend a max of 15k but after looking at so much rubbish had to eventually spend a bit more.
Its easy to look on Ebay or Autotrader and see cars that seem like a bargain but when you go and actually see them you usually realise the reason they are cheap is that they are rubbish.

Won't have a bad word said against Hexagon, they have bought 2 of my cars, ( one is still sat in the showroom, it's the Phoenix yellow Z3MCoupe with the BBS alloys on ), the other is the X5 that I currently own, a long story, but basically, I sold it to them in 2010, they then sold it on, the guy had the LPG kit put in, and I bought it back a couple of months ago from him.
They do like to buy low mileage examples, but they also like to inflate the prices, but this can work out well for the private seller, ( think about it ).

mine isnt a cat d, however ive had them in the past and theres absolutly nothing wrong with them as long as they have been repaired correctly, as long as you remember to pay at least 25% less for it as it will always be worth that sort of % less

I am perfectly happy with Hexagon - my lovely fully-stacked 4.8is came from them two years ago, it was only around 27 000 miles when I bought it. Came with the usual AUC warranty plus Hexagon agreed to pay the repairs of some extras - a rusty fuel filler pipe inlet, a few small things not covered under the AUC warranty. Couldn't fault them, and they paid me nearly £12K for my 3.0i. My 4.8 was probably overpriced but it had virtually every factory extra including towbar and Webasto for petrol engined cars, a rare and pricey addition. You generally get what you pay for, and all the bright ideas about buying shady deals from "private" sales and Honest Joe's Corner Car Lot - all I can say is each to their own. I wouldn't touch a 2007 X with a bargepole as its in the £400+ road tax bracket and may be a target of the DVLA at some future stage to raise the tax to even more ridiculous heights - some of them are "cheap" because of that little downer. I would go back to Hexagon for a Z4M, or a nice M series or another X, I was very happy with their service and with the BMW warranty and extended warranty. I tend to keep cars for many years anyway, so better in my mind to have one that I absolutely love rather than some bodged up thing with a dodgy history and no BMW warranty just because its "cheap". If I need a "cheap" car I'll find a Fiesta
