Turbo issues

Post by andyr81 » Fri May 04, 2012 11:23 am

Hello, got a X5 3.0D sport auto and im having what i think is turbo related problems, heres whats happened and what ive done up to now

Day 1: Topped engine oil up, drove out of workshop to the shop up the road, car started generating a 'wooshing' (like the windscreen de-mister fans were on full blast) noise only on medium to full acceleration.
Started investigation into possible causes and came across the discovery of a engine oil breather filter located at top/rear of engine, removed said filter and found was blocked solid with oil. Was informed that when/if this blockes can cause turbo failure; bought new filter from Bowker BMW, ran and tested, started white smoking badly(couldnt see out of rear view mirror).

Day 2: Further investigation and reading forums, i decided it could be the oil seals in turbo so started to remove turbo.(Day 2 passed very slowly and with much cursing!)

Day 3: Report back from turbo repair, seals failed and needed new bearings. removed intercooler for clean and test, also intercooler pipes for cleaning. Drained engine oil, new oil and air filter fitted

Day 4: Fitted turbo, intercooler and pipes, filled with oil. Ran on tick-over for 30 mins, seemed ok. Took for test drive, still same symptoms, 'wooshing' noise from behind dash, white smoke with a very oily smell. Not a clue whats happening with it now, thinking the turbo is still at fault, as cant help but notice lack of turbo 'whistle' on acceleration.

Im at a loss now, and dont have a lot of experience with technical cars like this, more of a plant man, impact engineering!

Any ideas or help will be much appreciated!

Regards

Cracked inlet manifold? I had this on my 2001 3.0d and the symptoms were lack of power on acceleration, white smoke and hissing noise from engine.
