Thanks gchristofi and Steamyrotter!

I have in the meantime and after some digging got an offer from idealengines.co.uk to have my gearbox replaced with a reconditioned one, for around £1500.- all-in. They also give a 12 month warranty. I am wondering if anybody has done business with them before? They received good - to - ok reviews and feedback on http://www.freeindex.co.uk/profile(idea ... 330429.htm (you may need to copy/paste the whole URL into your browser) but has anybody got first hand experience with this company based in Barking/Essex?

Thanks again for all feedback and info provided!
Peter

Another thing i was told was to change the oil heat exchanger for new as you will never get the debris out of it.

Good luck with it mate
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Your comment about battery issues is also well known, and most folks here fit something like a Bosch Silver series. Because these cars have so many computers in them, they are sensitive to voltage spikes - no different to any other type of electronic systems really - and this usually manifests itself as odd error messages being thrown up which promptly disappear the next time you start the car.

One piece of guidance I saw was to turn the key to Pos2, wait for all the warning lights to cycle (about 5 seconds) and then start the car. This allows everything to run through its boot up cycle. It certainly seemed to work on mine.. :)

11 years is pretty good for a car battery... Most only last about 6 years, and that gets shortened if the battery is ever allowed to go completely dead. Some of us have bought CTEK Battery conditioner/chargers if any of our cars are little used or only used on short journeys.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
