good Z3 forum
Post by gadgetJunky72 » Mon Apr 23, 2012 2:55 pm
so i know a few of you have come from the Z4forum, but do you know of any good Z3 forums.
I've sold my Porsche in an attempt to downsize, but now really fancy a Z3 or Z4 for the summer (don't laugh Sanj). Just wanted to read up a bit before diving in.
BTW if anyone knows of any for sale feel free to PM me.
Cheers
Pav

gadgetjunky72 - aforemetioned site is most widely used. Some Z3 chat on bmwland and bimmerforums.co.uk
FWIW the 2nd BMW at home is a Z3 facelift (2.2i). I looked at a few before buying & whilst not an expert I have a fair idea on what to look for especially with the non M versions.
In terms of engine choice..........a lot may depend on what you want in terms of performance/mpg. Our 2.2i, (non sport version), doesn't have aircon or electric hood so 2 less things to go wrong. Performance hardly breathtaking but IMO more adequate with 0-62 circa 7.7 & top speed of 140mph.
Z3 chassis not quite as rigid as some other roadsters so personally I am happy with the performance relative to the chassis. Drove a few 2.8i examples also - good cars to drive and more torque than the 2.2i albeit IMO the later is more enjoyable to drive when using the revs. Would have happily had either on drive but wanted a 6 cylinder car for smoothness.performance & durability. 2.2i packs 20hp more than the quite rare 2.0i.
These are getting on a bit now so even fairly sorted cars may need some spending once sourced. Ours has 120k on clock & has had new drop links, balljoints, rad coolant pipework, horns, dash bulbs & like most over 80k miles it would probably benefit from new shocks & maybe different tyres when same need changing.
Some are keen to stiffen the car with braces, aftermarket suspension etc, however, there is a lot to be said for having proper car on decent stock suspension, matching tyres, decent alignment & no rattles knocks underside......at least as a base car - that way any bracing benefits can be properly assessed rather than being fitted to conceal other basis issues. Rear bush change not an easy jobon these.
IMO many are too quick to criticise the Z3. E36 front end and E30 rear suspension. E30 highly regarded in terms of handling and BMW compacts with similar suspension always well spoken of by BMW mag journailsts.
Feel free to post or PM any specific Q's & I will answer as best able.

I'll be putting ours up for c£14k which is a lot of car for the money for somebody and with just 30k miles on it, it is barely run.

I drove a 'Cassis' (Purple) Micra Shape for a while to commute from Crawley to Whyteleafe every day....

It was Hers, not mine. Scary in cross winds on the M23 though..
